I just love this woman's attitude.
I think there is a fine line between being competitive and being a perfectionist. I also think it's very important to celebrate what you did well in a race and not hyper-focus on what you need to improve to the point where it keeps you from celebrating the positive.
IOW, I agree with the author's wife. That dude is crazy.
Seriously, he's disappointed in his performance because he was 2 seconds off his PR? Heck, 2 seconds is noise in most races. Sure, he can know that he needs to work a bit harder if he wants to PR next time, but that doesn't erase the good stuff, like experiencing breaking the tape and being 2 min. ahead of the nearest competition.
