I think size is the biggest thing ... then the 405 does wireless sync with the pc and other 405's.

The size and also the 405 doesn't have any buttons -- the face works like an ipod (I believe it's called bivel or something like that).
The 310 looks a lot like the 305 but will be waterproof.
I believe both the 405 and 310 have ANT+ technology and can pick up power meters on the bike.
Reading the tri forums it sounds like the 310 will probably be THE thing for triathletes.
I just got a 305 and love it -- you can probably find it for 149.99 on-line. i have heard mix things about the 405, especially getting used to the bivel and the difficulty of changing views while running.
Depending on the reviews of the 310 I'll probably end up selling my 305 to a student and making another purchase
