What is this?

I am not looking for a diagnosis just an informed opinion.  =)
I have lost almost 100 pounds (I still weight 203) and I am feeling great so I joined a gym.
I have gone three times this week skipping 1 day inbetween workouts. On my days off I walk at work during lunch and sometimes on breaks. 
My muscles have been tight but not extremely sore the next day after the workout.  I dont do anything high impact.  I start with the treadmill or eliptical then go to strength and back to cardio for a bit then home.

Here's the question:  I have noticed a red patch on my right leg on the shin just above the ankle.  It is painful but there is no swelling. It has gotten somewhat better overnight.  It showed up the day after I did leg lifts on a weight machine.  Any idea what this is?  I am wondering if I wasnt positioned correctly on the machine.  Dont runners get shin splints (I know that isnt the right word...sorry)?  I am not a runner but after little to no exercise for decades maybe the some impact injury.
