I would drink a shake before & after... And be sure to eat carbs AFTER your workout... A banana is great! Never heard of specifically drinking a glass of milk after workouts... probably for the protein content, but you will get more protein from a shake than milk. Find a chocolate protein powder and mix with milk if you would like! Good luck....

Dan,
Don't you think that since they are pre-op that should be focusing on dropping pounds. Carbs and the less filling protein from a shake might be something to incorporate post op. I only used shakes pre-op when I was doing my liquid only diet, which I used to drop weight before surgery. However I 100% agree on carbs and protein now post-op especially for people training and doing daily strenuous exercise. I half of a banana half an hour before a run makes a big difference for me.

Pre or Post op doesn't matter when it comes to protein & carbs.... Either way, you are tearing muscle fibers that need to repair when you workout (Which protein helps speed along) and your bodies' glycogen stores can be used in a workout, that is why it is so important that within about 20 minutes post workout get some protein in and especially carbs (to replenish glycogen stores) so you have plenty of energy for your next workout. Protein isn't just for meal replacements or losing weight, it is so much more than that. Try to keep that 4:1 carb to protein ratio... In my humble opinion (IMHO) :)'

If you read Runners World magazine they will tell you that low fat chocolate milk is a great recovery drink. It has the right amount of carbs and protein. I drink 8 oz. after my runs.
I have always been told carbs before a work out because your mucsles burn it for energy and protein after to help them mend and repair.

I did lots of protein drinks and protein bars pre surgery.
My docs plan required a 20% weight loss before they would do the surgery.
I basically ate pre-op like I was going to have to eat post-op.
When I was exercising in the morning (at the gym by 5:30 a.m.) and I didn't have time to fix a meal and have it be digested enough that it wasn't a little brick in my stomach while working out, I would have a protein bar as soon as I got up in the morning, then head to the gym. That usually gave me a 1/2 hour or so before I started working out. Then after the workout I would drink a vanilla or chocolate protein drink.
Pure Protein makes a great bar and a drink. The drinks are convenient because the come in a can and are already pre mixed.
