Please tell me about biking

I live in a really good place for bike riding.  Close to bike paths, good neighborhood, etc...  Ever since I moved in I have wanted to bike but my weight has always stopped me and continues to do so.  I'm about 370 lbs and have been walking to get my exercise but really would like to bike.  Is this doable?  I have a problem with being self conscious which I suppose I could get over but at this weight can I even find a bike that would support me?  I don't want to walk into a bike store and be totally humiliated.  Should I lose more weight before I attempt it?

Do you have access to a gym? If so , I would recommend starting on the stationary recumbent or stationary upright bike, then if you enjoy that, get into a spin class! start with that, then if you enjoy it, get a good bike that will be better suited for a weight you will maintain... because bikes are'nt cheap! If you happen to fall or get a flat and took a spill on a bike, at 370 pounds, you could do some real damage.... Your weight will fly off quick, so get to the gym, get comfy in the saddle, then when you have lost a little more, get yourself a good bike and have at it this summer! Best of luck to you....

I second what Dan says.  I was afraid for a long time that I'd 'break' my bike too.  I believe I was probably 320-340 while riding it.  I had(have) a Trek 1500 aluminum frame bike that seemed to handle me just fine.  If you do ride I highly recommend putting extra air in the tire -- like 120-125 psi to help prevent pincher flats.  Also realize that the heavier you are the more prone you are to get pincher flats so make sure you have an extra tube or two when you go out.
What Dan said about spinning class is probably spot on though -- even if you don't have a membership at a local gym they probably offer a single class fee.  Try it and if you like it then examine the next level.
