Gatorade's Quest for G reality show... I'm in episode 2.
It was purely on a whim that I went to the audition for Gatorade's The Quest for G reality show. I thought it would be fun. To start out, they wanted athletes in an age range of 18 - 35 and I'm 37. They were looking for athletes that were at the top of their sport. I'm lucky to finish in the top 25% in my triathlons. I honestly never thought I would even be considered for placement in the show but the casting directors kept calling me back to come in for additional auditions with different people. I had the same slant in each of the auditions which was it really didn't matter how much training I got, I was very realistic in the fact that there was no way that I would ever be a pro triathlete. I could quit my job and train for the next 10 years and I still wouldn't be even close to the level of an elite amateur, much less a pro! I just want to be an Ironman and I wanted my first Ironman to be Kona. I stressed that if there was any way that Gatorade could help me get closer to that goal that then I am all for being on their show and telling my story. I know that I can inspire and motivate but if that's not what they are looking for then the Quest for G probably isn't for me.
Well, they auditioned thousands of athletes in multiple locations around the country. Somehow I made it into the top candidates to be considered for the show. My good friend Philippe auditioned as well but him being in the final 50 was no stretch of the imagination since he was the #1 ranked elite pro amateur and he would be going pro no matter if Gatorade assisted him or not. But me? Heh.
When we made it to the top 50 candidates the casting directors asked everyone to make a video of training sessions, interviews with friends and family and to discuss our 'journeys'. I produced both Phillipe and my videos and sent both in to the casting people. I knew Philippe would go through but once again I thought that would be the end of my communication with Gatorade.
Well they contacted me again to let me know that I was one of the final 27 candidates. (as was Philippe) From those 27 athletes they chose 16 to attend the Boot Camp in Los Angeles. Philippe did make it to the 16 but I, unfortunately, was not chosen. It's a good thing though because the athletes that were chosen were all at the top of their sport. (Boxing / track and field / vollyball / martial arts) The show was also biased towards strength and power sports rather than endurance from what Philippe was telling me. Philippe made it to the final day of the boot camp before he got cut. There was one other triathlete, a female, that was also cut at the same time as Philippe.
