NYC Marathon

Well, I didn't get to run this year but I did go to the marathon as a spectator and that was a lot of fun too. I wanted to return the favor of all those that cheered me on last year by doing some cheering this year! I headed into Manhattan a little on the late side because I wanted to cheer for the runners who would finish closer to the time I would have. I remembered that there weren't as many people cheering around mile 21, so that is where we went. It was so much fun! It was a great feeling when we put a smile on somebody's face because we cheered for them. I hope that I will be out there running again next year. It really is an amazing experience on both sides; as a runner and as a spectator.

Pretty Cool, Mary!

I remember that at about that time it was good to have people still around cheering.  I was so slow on my first that it was awfully nice having folks around actually enjoying cheering people on.

I'm sure eveyone that you cheered on thanks you, as would I.

I have run Disney twice and Hyannis, MA once.  Neither are big spectator races.  At Disney, people cheer where there are monorail stops and a few other places but overall, I'd say that 90% of the time, you are just running with no spectators.  Hyannis was worse.  There were a few people at mile 5, 8 and 13 due to relay exchanges but that was it.

It was nice of you to go out and support others.  Way to go!!!

I ran a 1/2 Sunday and it does help when some one you don't know is cheering you on giving you encouragement. After Sunday I think I will either volunteer or just go out and cheer in some of the races I an not going to run.

That's awesome Mary!  I am only a 5k runner (and a slow one at that - LOL), but it always brings a smile to my face when I pass by people cheering for me.  I bet you helped many people finish that race with your encouragement.  Way to go!!

Hi Mary,

I'm glad to hear that you were able to be part of the fun this weekend.  That event must be just so amazing with the sheer number of people participating, and the diversity.  I hope all is well with your new apartment and things have settled down.
