Ran 13 miles
Hi everyone, went for my long run Sat. and ended up doing 13 miles. Took 2:09:50,comes out to a 9:59 pace, which I am very happy with.
I was doing really well up to just a little over mile 11, I started to cramp up. Went on for about 1/2 a mile, but I stopped running and walked a little and then stopped streached for a few minutes. Up to that point I was running really well, I had been staying at about a 9:30 pace or a little faster. Started back runnng, well jogging and finished really slow, was taking really short choppy strides.
It wasn't that hot but my clothes was were covered in salt. I did use a couple of gels during my run, but I didn't take in any fluids. I don't know if it is where I sweated out so much salt or dehydration. Probably more dehydration than any thing.
I came home and got on line and signed up for a `1/2 marathon on Nov. 2. With that run, I know I can make it and with some better planning I think I can do it under 2 hours. Although I had a little trouble at the end I was having a really good run up till that point. Came home and did the ice bath and have been putting ice packs on my knees and I feel pretty good. Today was a day of rest tomorrow will be an easy run or maybe stationary bike.
Now that I have been able to run 13 miles, I am really thinking of trying to build up to a full marathon. My birthday is Jan 25 and I wondering if I can be in good enough shape to complete one by then? If I complete or I should say when I complete the 1/2, a full is my next goal.
MAN I LOVE THIS ****!!!!!! I never dreamed this would be possible. Not at 50 any way.
LIFE IS GOOD!!!!!!

Hey Pan Head!
Nice run! Yeah, probably dehydration was the culprit. That's not a problem for me most of the time, but it may be the gender difference.
The marathon I'm doing is in January (the 18th) and my long run this week was 10 miles. Find yourself a marathon training plan and see if you can start at whatever week the next one or two is so that it ends at the right time. I don't see any reason why you couldn't be ready for a full in January. You may be better off finding a beginner plan even though you've been running a while. It really is a lot of pound on the body and I'm not sure if you're used to the mileage you'd have to rack up. Just take a look and see what you think you can do. You'll be fine with an intermediate plan if you've been running 20-25 miles a week.
Good luck on your half and preparation for the full!

you are my hero. excellent time too.
Keep believing in yourself. You are doing great things.
I am all off track with my running and am really looking forward to getting back on track after elections. I am running for City council and I'm doing door-to-door brochures throughout the city 1 to 3 hours at a time but its not the same as jogging. Unitl I get the City canvased, I feel guilty about taking 2 hours to jog I should be campaigning.
Keep the pavement warm for me till I get back out there with you guys.
Great accomplishment. Thanks for posting. It keeps me hungry to do likewise.

I did a 5K a couple of weeks ago and my local state senator ran in it. It is not the first time I have seen him in a race. What I like about him is he seems to just be there to run. Sure he is friendly and shaking hands but he doesn't come off as looking for votes as much as he just enjoys running. Make him seem more like an average guy, he's there just like the rest of us, running shorts and a t-shirt. If you didn't know him you would have no idea he is a state senator.
good luck with the campaign.

Ok...First..."coach sherry" is a gonna chastize you for not taking in ANY fluids! My coach woulda slaughtered me. I'm chalking it up to inexperience-so no worries. :D
First-have you done a sweat test? It's VERY revealing.
1st-weigh yourself nekkid
2nd-Run all-out, like a 10k pace for 60 minutes.
3rd-dry off as fast as you can.
4th-reweigh yourself, take in account of the #of ounces of fluid intake.
I lose 4 pounds 9 oz of water an hour.
I have a handheld I carry when I run. I used to use a fuel belt, but I have an hourglass and boy, that thing will ride up and then it will ruin my tech shirts.
Ok, ALSO, with that said...did you know that you NEED water when you take gels. Gels need water injested to help w/breaking it down. If you don't take WATER (not gatorade) your body will dehydrate itself even more b/c it will take water FROM your body to help digest.

I will consider my self spanked, wait that's another forum.
Yeah, I know I should be taking in fluids. I had done a couple of 10 mile runs and had no problem so I thought I could do the 13. Guess not. I had really planned on doing only 11 or 12 miles, but at 10 miles I was feeling so good I changed my route to add a couple more.
I don't have a fuel belt and I just can't imagine carrying a bottle for an hour or two. What do you use?
No I didn't know that about the gel's. Makes sense though when you stop and think about it. Maybe they need to write a "running for dummies" book. Probably is one.
I do always have a couple of G2's waiting in the car for when I finish.
I have done the sweat test at shorter distances, 5K. I wil try to remember to do it tonight. I usually run for an hour at the fitness center.
Thanks, Coach

For a recovery drink you'll need something w/a 4:1 carb/protein ratio to rebuild the muscles. The carbs deliver the protein or something. My nutritionist has me doing LF choco milk.
I use a handheld. I thought that people were crazy carrying them. I use a nathan one. I think I'm going to switch to the ampiphod one. I like my nathan, but I hear really good things about tha amp.
It's not like you're gripping the bottle. There is a strap, so your hand is stuck to it. It's not heavy either. 20oz bottle.
