Diva Day 5k
Hey guys!
I did a fun, short race today. Not really used to the short ones, but it was a blast anyway.
My town does an All Women's Run every year. This year a new group took it over, so there was only a 5k, but things are looking good for a 10k next year.
Anyway, the race didn't start until 10, so I got up, fed the cats, drank some coffee, had a banana, and just relaxed for a while. I decided to take a shower and get ready a little after 8 and then spent about 20 minutes deciding what to wear. I opted for the bright pink SkirtSports tri outfit I have, and a white long-sleeved shirt underneath. I'm not used to this short of a race, so my only real goal was to get in around a 9:00 pace.
I got to the race and picked up my packet and proceeded to visit most of the vendors. Did I tell you it was raining? Well, it was. Hard. I hate the rain. It slowed down a bit and I took a little walk around the park to loosen up a little, ran into a couple people I knew, and then we did a group stretch and warm-up. It was fun seeing lots of ages of girls and women and lots of them were in really cute costumes and tiaras.
Everyone started lining up about 5 minutes before he start and the rain miraculously slowed way down. I was kind of in the middle of the pack, so it took a little bit to get going. I haven't yet learned to line up closer to the front. Finally got comfortable running about 5 minutes into it, and then by mile 1 I was already too hot. Crap! Two more still to go. Anyway, I have no idea what my speed is, but it feels pretty close to what I've been doing on the tread, so I'm happy (but still too hot). All I can say is I just kept going at a pretty even pace and when I turned to see the finish line I sped up a little like you always do at the end and realized I was going to make it UNDER 27 MINUTES! My fastest 5k up to this point was around 28.
As it turned out, my time was 26:52 (8:40 pace), 54 of 389, and 4th in my age group. Overall, I was a very happy girl, but I'm sure I would've been faster if I wasn't so damned hot! It was a great race, though, and I love the women only races. They're a heck of a lot of fun!

Congratulations Linn on a new PR! I think pacing for the 5K is tough after all the distance running.

Thanks Cassie!
A bunch of people running the race thought the course was a little long since their times were off (these were the FAST girls saying this who know how they run consistently), so I may have been a little faster, even. It did seem a little long from the 3 mile marker to the finish. It should take me less than a minute to do and if felt like closer to 2.
I do have a hard time pacing for the shorter races with all the emphasis on distance lately, but I think it's a good experience anyway. I'll try to do more of the 5k's and see if I can get better adjusted. I won't travel to do one, but there are quite a few in town.
