Hi Everyone,

I want to do the L.A. Marathon on Feb. 16, 2009.  Do you think, with my prior running experience, I could train for a marathon in 4 months?  My longest distance is 13 miles.  I will running my first half-marathon in less than 2 weeks.

Kim,

With your half marathon training as your base, 4 months is long enough to train for your marathon.  Just adjust your marathon training plan to take into consideration the gains you've already made with your long runs.

Enjoy your first half!

Hey Kim,

I'm with Sherry and Cassie.  It's totally doable.  Find a plan and adjust it to end at your marathon.  I'm doing a 20 week plan.  It would have been fine for me to start the training now and still be ready for the one I'm doing in January.  This week my long run is 10 miles and I'm on week 5.

The only other thing I would suggest is that some of your weekday runs be a little longer.  Start trying to do them for 35-40 minutes rather than 30.

Kim,

I agree with everyone, it is totally doable.  Find yourself a good training program and stick with it!

Yup, that's plenty of time if you train smart.

I used John Bingham's "Marathoning for Mortals" when I trained for my first marathon last year.  He has some great training plans for running, walking and run / walking your first marathon.

Good luck!

Chad
