10 K question - didn't train much
Hi all,
I haven't been on here much...too busy out having fun! I did a 10K in June and had a blast! To train for it I participated in a training group and felt really ready.
Well...I'm doing another 10K tomorrow night and definitely don't feel ready. I've run 1 or 2 times a week for the last month and have done hiking, softball and tennis. It's a fairly flat course, with a gradual climb in the first 1/3 of the race. My plan is to just run for 10 minutes and walk for 1 for the whole course so I don't hurt myself. Does that make sense? Any other suggestions?
Thanks! Becky

I'd say you are about right but I just go with a pace that feels good and speed up or slow down as your body finds its rythym. Walk as needed and as you get your wind back, jog back up to comfortable and keep doing that. The hill at the start will be the real pysch job. I expect your training experince with the group will still benefit you. The cross trainnig isn't the same as running traing but I bet yuo're not far off your old form if you are still getting out there a few times a week. Most important, have a great time and post your war story when you get back. We all love a good gut wretching tear jerking success story. Or I'll jus****ch for you on ESPN!
For a really long run, I do a 4 min run to 1 min walk. I might try something closer to that. I have experimented with all sorts of ratios and you are only losing a few (about 20) seconds a mile by throwing in an extra walk break. It also may allow you to run faster and make up the time.
