New to this board in Singapore
Hi, I'm visiting from the Texas forum, living part time in Singapore and 16 months post-op. I have a dog in both countries that I work out with, mostly walking as fast as I can go for an hour or more, every morning, but lately I've started adding some running too. My problem is figuring out how far I'm going. Here, in Singapore, we live in a beautiful apartment complex that faces the sea, a marina, and ship channel with gorgeous cruise ships almost every morning. There are loads of paved paths and 12 wood covered public decks, as well as workout circuit stations all over the place. In Texas, we have a house in a subdivision and I walk the sidewalks or ride my bike every day for at least an hour. My Texas dog is Kazan, a German shepherd, and my Singapore dog is Smokey, a Smooth Fox Terrier. They're both great companions, but Kazan is definitely more trainable, not to put the little guy down, he can't help it if he's a terrier.
Can anyone advise me about starting a "real" running program? Right now, we walk for about 10 minutes so the dog can potty and I can warm up, then we sprint for 5 minutes, walk 10, jog 5, etc for the hour. We also run on all of the wood decks, it takes going down 6 steps, run 20 steps, then up 6 steps. Smokey loves the running and would gladly pull me on skates or something if I could balance, but Kazan is much more obedient and sticks to my side like glue (which I love). In other words, the dogs won't limit what I do, but am I doing things the right way? I wear the sports bras from Academy, Nike or something, New Balance shoes that are fitted for me at the NB store, an IPod, Cell phone, running belt with water bottle and pouch for the electronics. What else should I do? I bought a pedometer while I was home last month, but couldn't figure it out and left it for my daughter. Are there simpler ones that don't require a lot of tech know-how?
I'll be checking back with ya'll every morning my time, evenings US time and see what I can learn.

I bought a Garmin Forerunner gps watch. It will tell you how fast, how far and heart rate if you buy the one with a heart rate monitor. I really like mine. I haven't used all the bells and whistles yet but I run with it all the time. I used it Sat in a 5K. I set the virtual partner at 8:00 minute mile and it showed me if I was ahead or behind that pace. With the heart rate monitor I paid 350.00 for mine, 50.00 less without the heart rate monitor. Go to www.garmin.com for more information.
