Central Park is just wonderful for running - you should check the road runners website to see if there are any races or lectures going on while you are here (www.nyrr.org).  Another great run is Riverside Park on the West side.  You can run all the way from upper Manhattan to the end along the Hudson River - the fact that it is a flat run doesn't hurt.:)   Oh, another great place to think about running is over the Brooklyn Bridge - it is a beautiful trip across the bridge.  I've only walked it, but I'm sure it would be fun to run.

Depending on where you are staying, the North Fork of Long Island is beautiful to go bike riding.  If the weather isn't good, you could check out Chelsea Piers for basketball, roller blading and lots of other activities.   There will also be some car-free riding in the city in August; here is a link to some more info on that: http://www.bikeradar.com/commuting/news/article/car-free-sat urday-cycling-for-new-york-city-17086
