In my town (Lansing, MI), there are multiple runs available every week.  I mostly find out through advertising or if I'm searching one out, there is a running store here called Playmakers that has a website listing all of them. I've never traveled out of town to go to one (although I have walked 5k's sometimes when I'm vacationing somewhere).

I have found local groups and check websites such as Active.com, sportsbackers.org, kalerunning.com, and roadrunners.com.  There are hords of others but these work for me.

Since I live in a sparcely populated state, there is a state running calendar that I use.  I have done runs in towns I have relatives or friends as well as my home town.  Sometimes my husband's brother tells me about ones in his home town also (which won't be on the state running calendar because it's such a small town).  As far as distances from home go, I've driven over 200 miles on more than one occasion, and will be going that far for my next triathlon.  Most of the time I have someone to stay with when I go that far.  I found out about the marathon and half marathon I do when I was looking for a race in AZ when I went to visit my parents a few years ago.   Linn

My local newspaper lists some local events.  Coolrunning.com is a great site that lists events and results.  After a while, you just know.  You can smell them.

Coolrunning.com is my main source.  Locally we also have many races, and I'm participating in a Road Race Series this summer - if I run in 6 out of 8 of them I get a cool jacket.  One of them has to be a 10K.  I've run one of the series so far.  And...we have a great running store in my town and they have all kinds of info about upcoming races. Run on!

Check out the video on youtube that my partner made about my WLS journey!

If there any running stores in your area, check there.  They always have local runs advertised.
Without struggle, there is no progress.
