I would like to add some strength training but after I'm done with my cardio - I'm sooooo tired I don't have the strength and my muscles feel weak. I typically do 35 mins on the elliptical and 15 to 25 mins on the treadmill. Do I need to choose between cardio and weights. and if I choose weights how long do I need to wait to do cardio. I would like to fit all my exercise into one -1-1 1/2hour trip to the gym each time. what should I do?

I know I've had some good luck with drinking a protein potion during long workouts. It's my own recipe I've made up over time. Works for me! I'm sure there are some drinks out there that do the same thing you can buy premixed. It seems to give me energy without bloating my stomach to the point of getting ill during a workout. I just sip it while I'm training. I don't seem to drag during the last part of my workout since I've been drinking these things. 1 liter water 1 packet diet drink mix for flavor 1 scoop Splenda for flavor 1 scoop Vanilla 100 % Whey protein 20 g (I used to use straight BCAA but they're a little too expensive) 20 grams Glutamine 10 gram Creatine

You might even try taking a 5 or 10 minute break between cardio and lifting, drink a protein drink or eat a banana, then lift. Personally, I like cardio after lifting, as a separate workout or on a off day.  But I have the facilities to train throughout the day, so I can split it up like that. Good luck Earl

On days that I am doing cardio and weights I like to eat a banana and some protein about an hour before I work out.  That helps keep me from becoming exhausted in the middle of my workout.  If I eat sooner than about an hour I will get a "stitch" when I do cardio. Good Luck. Carla

Most experts don't recommend doing cardio and weights on the same day, but to alternate them. If you have to do the same day do weights first, then cardio. Maybe if you do the weights first then around 20-30mins cardio you shouldn't get too tired (you don't need to wait in between). Libby http://libby.withnall.com

My suggestion...and this is what my personal trainer had me do..cuz i wanted to do the same thing you are wanting.

I do the elliptical...then do my weight training after a couple of minutes breathing time (about 2 minutes )  then i walk the treadmill for about 20 minutes on a low incline but a speed of 3 or so...after that i stretch....And this is the most important thing to do after any exercise...WATER...drink lots of it...during and after.  I also do not do weight training on a daily basis..the muscles need down time ..i do weight training every other day..sometimes only 2 days a week if i go to the gym only 4 times a week.

Good luck to you
