Greetings All,     I am 8 days post-op with my new RNY. I am doing realy well. Im up to walking 1.5 miles, three times a day. Following all dietary, exercise, and vit/sup recomendations as gospel. Before the surgery, I powerlifted for the last 20 years. Nothing like heavy weights!! The Doc said it would be at least 6 weeks after surgery until I could start lifting again, but not to go too heavy. Anyone else every powerlifted, powerlifted after surgery, and how long after surgery did it take to start heavy workouts again? Thanks for all replies in advance, Gary

I powerlifted. I started some light training a few days after surgery, then just generally lifting, like bodybuilding after about 6 weeks. I remember going from 900 pound quarter squats just before surgery to squatting an empty bar six weeks post op...and it was hard...talk about a ego buster. My surgeon knew I lifted so gave me the go ahead to train after about 4 weeks.  I don't necessarily powerlift now, but do use some of the methods. I love training with chains and bands. I started throwing shot put and discus after WLS and then Olympic lifting to help my throwing. I'd say from what I know now. Don't do any crunching type abs exercises or deadlifting the first 6 months, unless you really want a hernia operation. Squats...yes lifting without a belt will make your abs stronger, but I'd wear one over your incision sites to protect against a hernia the first 6 months or so. I'd say powerlifting type training (I'm big on Westside Barbell methods) is pretty much out until at least 2 or 3 months post op. Then go for it. Good luck. Post your workouts on here. Earl
