Best Way to Start

I have horrible knees.  Some days it hurts just to get out of bed; I'm only 36, but the weight has taken it's toll on my joints.  I thought about swiming, but would I be better off walking in the water to build up some stamina. Any ideas?

Long Term Goal (12/31/2008) -

I will loose at least 10 pounds a month, by ensuring that I get all my protein in (60-80 grams), eliminating all the bad carbs, getting at least two liters of water in a day and getting my booty into the gym at for least 30 cardio minutes a day, at least four days a week, doing ball pilates every other day at home, picking up Tai Chi on Saturdays and learning to Belly Dance.  AND I will make a concerted effort to ignore the little voice which says that "you can't or you won't" and do what I know I can.

oh for sure...walking in the water will be helpful.  See if there is any water aerobics at your ocmmunity college or YMCA. That is fun, and you will not hurt thsoe joints or knees. Swim if you can, even a little. Swimming may not raise heart rate, but trust me, you are getting a great all over body workout.  Good luck, Wendy!

Here is an idea.  People who water run while rehabing an injury report that they lose little fitness which means that this is a great work out.  It may be something that you have to work up to. http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/pmr/obser100.c fm Good luck. Scott

Water walking is a great exercise.  You'll be surprised if you really dig in and raise you're knees high while walking, it's a great ab workout too. When I had a pool I'd do sprints across the pool. Very exhausting. At OSU they have a heated pool just for water walking. Good luck. Earl
