I met with a trainer on Monday night for a MAP test. MAP is Metabolic Assessment Profile. They put a mask on you and hook you up to a computer while you're on the treadmill and push you as hard as you can go while measuring your oxygen intake and CO2 output. The entire test lasts about 20 minutes and the outcome is learning at what heart rates you burn the most fat, and at which heart rate you go anaerobic and switch to burning pure carbs. My assessment results stunned the trainer and pleasantly surprised me. My metabolic profile matches that of an athlete. I see myself as the least athletic person EVER, so this totally took me by surprise. He literally said to me "You've found your inner athlete" and then invited me to join a cardio training class that is reserved for "people at their ideal weight." He also gave me my next 12 weeks of cardio all of which are at the advanced level. My husband is usually with me at the gym every night, but when I had my test, he was out of town. When I got home and I called him to share my results, he said "What do you expect? You've busted your butt!" I guess because I actually see results now (whereas pre-op, all the diet and exercise in the world was for naught), it all seems really easy and not like I'm working hard. I do attribute a lot of my success to exercise and preach it's benefits at every support group I attend. Anyway, I know I don't post regularly over here even though I regularly lurk. I just had to share my exercise/fitness WOW with some folks that would relate.

YESSS! And it does inspire me. being still *fat*, and working so hard at exercise, I so relate to your words "for naught". Of course, to a degree...luckily for me, I know exercise has so many other benefits, only a few about weight loss. I have the inner athlete, too!  She needs to be released!!!!  Thanks you for today's inspiration, jen!

Hey Jennifer, You rock! I think most people are born to be great at something, through fate, they just never get the opportunity to find out what that something is. Maybe this is your opportunity. I didn't start competing again in trac****il I was in my mid 40's and now I'm ranked in the top 20 in the country. If you enjoy it...go for it. Earl

Earl; That's awesome! The trainer did ask me what I'd like to train for. I guess because I never had the ability before it's just something I've never considered. I'm a little afraid of trying something new - fear of failure sure can be paralyzing, can't it? For the next 3 months, I'm going to focus on my new "advanced" workouts and see where I am after that. Maybe seeing the improvement will give me the confidence to go for it.

Jennifer, There's a guy I have a lot of respect for named Dan John. Yep, two first names. There's a link at the bottom of my profile page to his website. He's the one that inspired me to train for my first track meet. He basically said in an article to sit down and pick a competition, doesn't matter when or where and start training for it.  I was just in recovery from RNY so knew it wasn't going to be next month, so chose a meet about 1 year after surgery. I figured it could be a good milestone moment. So I trained 1 year for 1 meet. I had a ball training and competing and so do it more often now. (This is going into my 3rd year...so I'm a Sophomore. ) Most the runners I've seen on here seem to pick a nice, community driven for charity 5 K event to start with. Some people walk it, some run, some walk and run.  Just have fun with the 5000 or 10,000 other people trying to help the community on that day.  Don't worry about winning, the first goal should be to just participate and complete the race. Have fun. It's a real rush to set a goal and achieve it. That's why I'm hooked on weight training. I'm setting new personal records every workout, so I get a little rush every day. Good luck Earl

Hey girl, isn't it awesome!!  I recently did a cardio test with my trainer and he said I scored a "superior"---the highest level.  I told him I want a T-shirt with "I am Superior" printed on it.....LOL. Be proud, all that hard work has paid off! Hugs, Connie
