What should I buy?

I had gastric bypass 5.5 months ago and I've lost 100 pounds, with about 25 pounds to go. I'm finding it much easier to exercise, and want to do more, but I'm finding it hard to get to the gym as much as I want to. I'm doing good to get there twice a week (job, babysit grandbaby, sick mother-in-law, etc.). I have a treadmill at home that I love to use, but I'm considering buying some kind of a home gym. I don't want to spend a huge fortune, but I don't want to waste my money on something flimsy either. Do you have any suggestions?

Hey Wanda, 100 lbs....congratulations. I'm not a fan of most home gyms. The machines just let you do so much and limit you to a certain number of exercises. Someone has to put those puppies together too...that's a work or two in itself. If you do buy one, find one that's put together and try it out to see if it fits your body. I think most people would get more benefits from an adjustable Dumbbell set and adjustable bench. There are an endless number of exercises you can do with those 2 items and if you get the new kind of dumbbells where you just move a pin, it takes of very little space. Until then, get some rubber tubing or bands (Wal Mart less than 10 bucks) and go to town. Good luck Earl

I'm with Earl - a bench or a ball or both, with a variety of light weights:  2# - 20#.  Bands are great, too and portable/hideable when you don't use them. No need to spend a ton of money!

I have some of those bands and used them last night, and they felt pretty good. I was surprised at the workout I got from them. My son (age 26 and very fit) wants me to buy some dumb-bells that adjust by moving a pin, I guess what y'all are talking about. That might be what I end up with. Thanks for your help - I usually post on the RNY board but I'm nearly 6 months post-op and settling down pretty well.
