Please help me as I take on this fitness challenge!
Hi All! :-) Most of you know that I have spina bifida, a birth defect in which my spine failed to form correctly, and I experience paralysis below my waist and use a wheelchair. I recently celebrated my one-year anniversary since being banded - and this tool has been AMAZING. I'm close to one hundred pounds lighter than my heaviest weight, and I've developed an absolute love of exercise, which is difficult to do when you're in a wheelchair because of limited options. Over the past few years, I've become involved with an organization called Northeast Passage (http://www.nepassage.org), which brings AMAZING sport, recreation, and health promotion programming to people with disabilities. Their work has dramatically affected my life and the lives of many other people with disabilities in the New England area and beyond. They allow people with disabilities to participate in countless physical activities they otherwise wouldn't be able to do. I'm extremely passionate about NEP's work, and in September 2006, I experienced three of the most difficult and empowering days of my life by participating in the Three Notch Ride, a one hundred mile handcycle event through the White Mountains in New Hampshire, with over four thousand feet of elevation gain. This autumn, however, has been extremely difficult for me - I lost a very close family member, had major complications from a (non-band related) GI surgery, and sustained a third degree burn from a heating pad, which forced me to spend a month in the hospital. I just started getting back into my regular fitness routine this past week, and I'm doing so by training for another event to help NEP. Next month, I'm participating in the Dawn to Dusk Nordic Ski Challenge, my second Rite of Passage event. On Saturday, February 10th, 2007, I will be skiing as many kilometers as possible in an all day cross country ski relay event, to do my part in ensuring that one of the premiere adaptive sports organizations in the country is able to continue its work. I need your help! If you're able, please visit my fundraising site at http://www.firstgiving.com /jenfitzroy2 and donate $10 - the cost of a movie ticket - or more if you can - and give me a few words of support. It would truly mean the world to me and it would help the thousands of people with physical disabilities whose lives have been dramatically affected by NEP. Please take a second and appreciate all the physical activity options that are open to you and help make sure that programs like NEP continue so that people with disabilities can have access to them as well. THANK YOU and much love! ~Jen http://www.firstgiving.com/jenfitzroy2
