PCOS Pre-Op and getting nervous...anyone out there? :)
Getting ready for RNY in March, and being that I have PCOS, I'm already a victim of hairicide (I swear sometimes I can actually feel them jump to the shower drain ;) ). Hoping that somehow I will get a mass miracle--get my hair back, become skinny and gorgeous, become America's Next Top Model--okay, now back to reality. :D Seriously, just wondering what to expect from this whole adventure, and appreciative of any and all feedback/advice! :)
RNY on 03/06/12
Well, maybe we can go through it together. I also have PCOS and have my surgery set for March. maybe we can become pen pals. I know I have a support system like my husband and family but there really is nothing like support when you have someone that is going through the same things as you. you can email me anytime and if you are on facebook look me up Autumn Jensen-Baldwin.

Hello,
I had an RNY 11 1/2 years ago....it worked GREAT! I lost over 200 pounds, (lol, I bet 5 lbs of it was hair....) Truely though, I think I was the only one who noticed the hair loss though, I still looked okay. Thank God, Plus it does grow back. I have regained some of the weight back, why, who knows lol, pick an excuse, I went on the pill, I have had a baby, lol, maybe I am too happily married, dont know. But I am still working on trying to maintain a healthy weight. I would like to STAY under 200 pounds.
Anyways, it is an adventure, no doubt about it. Oh, dont know if you guys have tried it....but metformin....it is a drug that a lot of diabetics take, (I am not diabetic, nor have ever been.) BUT, it DOES help lose weight, and help things like PCOS a little better. (I have that too...I thank God every day that I was able to have a baby! I was told since I was 14 that it would be highly unlikely!)
Dont ever drink soda, just say no. :o) Truely that stuff is evil. Oh, there will also be times when you WANT to eat, but your body just flat out refuses. You will have food on your fork, or even in your mouth, and you wont be able to swallow, because your little pouch is already too full. Times like that are annoying, but, it is worth it being thinner! Now...being far out as I am, I can pretty much eat whatever I want, but if I make bad choices, I sometimes pay for them. With RNY, I had the dumping syndrome bad. That too, will pass. Thank goodness. That pain is horrible, but, it is just our new tool, telling us to make better choices!
Best of luck to you, you will do just fine! Surround yourself with folks who love and support you, and believe in you.

Cora, thanks so much!!! You just made me feel loads better about this whole thing! In answer to your question, yes, I've been on Metformin since 2006, and the max dose (2000mg/day) for the past two years. It didn't do anything for my weight, until about a year ago when my endo added an injectable called Victoza to the mix. It helps with the extra sugars naturally present in your food, so it takes some of the stress off of the insulin resistance from the PCOS. Between that and a dietician, I lost 30 pounds. But my weight in general is so stubborn, and has been my whole life (since age 7) that I decided the RNY was the way to go---it would help my body make better use of all the dietary/exercise changes I put in place.
Congrats on your baby!! That is a MAJOR accomplishment for we PCOSers, and a wonderful part of life that I'm glad you didn't have to give up. Did you have a boy or a girl? How old is baby now? (They're always the baby, even when they're my age, as my mom constantly tells me ;) )
You're absolutely right about soda, and that's one worry I don't have---I have NEVER been a soda drinker, jus****er all the way. And it's great to know that there will actually be times that I don't want food--such a nice alternative to always feeling hungry!! Do you find that fat in food is a problem for dumping, or just sugar--i.e., if you want to eat something baked, is it okay as long as it's made with Splenda-type substitute, or does it still get you because of the eggs/oil/shortening it might contain? As you can tell, I'm not really fond of throwing up or being in pain, so I'm trying to learn now how to avoid that pleasant experience...LOL
If you get the chance, please post back. I'd love to know more about what life is like on the Other Side of surgery! :)

Hi, I also have PCOS. I had surgery back in 2003, and am having a revision, soon, i will find out by the end of the week when. Turns out my original did not heal right.
I can tell you that friend foods, make me dump, and that things with too much sugar, and sometimes fat do as well. I know you may not like getting sick and hurting, but once something makes you dump, you never look at it the same again. I would love to get to know you, and take this journey again, with you. I hope that your surgery goes well :) I am an open book, so if you have questions, just ask :)
