Hi!  I had RNY surgery a week and a half ago and would love to share any tips or just be a listening ear!  And once you are 2-3 weeks out, we will be almost in the same place.

Hi Margie

Thank you for responding to my post

I would love to be a listening ear...

How did you get through the surgery and hospital stay?  How are you now?

I am excited but also nervous of the unknowing (ie: discomfort level, when will I be able to go back to work, etc.)

Anything you feel like sharing would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you are having a great day today - and I look forward to your next reply.

I got through the surgery fine.  I was weepy and nervous the week before.  The morning of, once they gave me a shot of valium I was just fine.  The next thing I remember after the valium is being up in my room several hours later, post-surgery.

My morphine pump was my best friend in the hospital.  It did not get rid of all the pain, but it helped.  My surgery was on Monday, and I went home on Thursday.  The doctor had come in on Wednesday and said "Are you ready to go home?" and I said "NO!"  I hurt for a little over a week.  The doctor gave me pain killer but I did not like how it made me feel so I didn't take it more than a couple times.

I got my staples out today which made me feel a LOT better.  I still have a little bit of pain, but it is totally tolerable at this point.

I would advise you to find jello flavors and clear broth that you like NOW.  I didn't like the flavors they gave me and by 5 days out, declared that if someone came NEAR me with Cherry jello again, they were going to lose their life!  But the first few days, that is all you will be able to have.

I can now drive which makes things easier.  I will go back to work next week.

I have also made progress as to what I can eat now, which also makes me much happier!  For dinner tonight, I had a wedge of spreadable cheese - YUM!  I can also have pudding now, which fills me a bit more than the yucky stuff from the first week.

If you want any of the less attractive details, I will give them to you.  But I am not going to share those unless you ask.

I lost 30 lbs. since my highest.  I lost 10 lbs. between March and September leading up to surgery.  I have now lost 20 lbs. since surgery.  I found that I didn't start to lose until I started eating stuff other than the clear stuff.  I advise you to find the first week food flavors which you like now, as I had a really tough time when I didn't even know what flavors to go to.

The morning after sugery, I had to go down to the x-ray dept. and stand up while they had me drink some radioactive die and they watched it go down.  That was tough as standing up then was VERY painful!  It hurt to get up and go to the bathroom throughout but on day one it was rather horrid.

Feel free to ask ANYTHING and  I will be happy to answer!

Margie
