I am a 60 year old who has decided to get healthier.  Just had surgery Monday 6/29 and am doing very well.  Would like some one to talk to about the ups and downs.

Hello,
I can sure talk (listen too) but I'm behind you as I'm scheduled for lap RNY July 17.
I've been doing a lot of reading on OH. I'm amazed at how people have WLS. Right now the posts on pre-op diets have my interest. My surgeon only requires it for lapbands so I don't "have" to. I'm 11 days from surgery and I'm thinking a major cut back with just liquids the last couple days (if I can make it easier or safer I'm all for it). I am suppose to be getting paperwork and appt times early this week so I may find out I should be doing something else.
Did you have an open or lap RNY?

Hi,

Yes, I had a lap RNY.
I had to drink clear liquids the day before surgery and take a bottle of mag citrate.  I pooped all day.  Are you going to have lap or open?
If you have a lap, walk as soon as possible and as often as possible.  The gas is what hurts.
I am a week out now and doing well.  On full liquids now and looking forward to soft.
Good Luck,- I'll keep you in my prayers

Hello,

Lap RNY.
Mag citrate wasn't on my list of dos & don'ts I received in the mail today. I'd have to go back and look again but I think it said no food after 7pm night before and nothing after midnight. Not sure on the those times. They do have some vitamins they prefer but don't require you to take pre-op. I'm good about taking my vitamins & meds, but I think I will go ahead and get the stuff they prefer.
Did you walk the same day as surgery? Or the day after?
I had surgery in 1999 (different type) that was open and I remember taking those 1st few steps. Just don't remember if it was same day or next day.
I've been doing water aerobics 4x a week. Had to miss today. I live in the country and had a couple dogs show up growling in my backyard with a tiny kitten in 1 of their mouths. I'm a sucker for cats... Poor thing was dragging 1 leg and scared to death. So I took him to my vet. He'll be fine. Limp for awhile. Can't be but 4 - 6 weeks old.
Thanks for the prayers. My nerves are pretty good right now, but I know I'll be nervous probably starting the night before. And bad the morning of.
Glad to hear you're doing so well!   :-)

Yes, I walked the night of surgery.  It is easier to walk after a lay than an open.  I was sore more than in pain, it was the nausea that got me.
Rember to sip.  I woke up the first night and took a big gulp and boy did I pay for it.
Glad to here you are a sucker for cats.
I have two great danes and a toy poodle.  Had a cat and when my youngest graduated from college she took it.  Then my oldest got divorced and maved in and we got 2 cats.  She remarried and took the cats.  But I am a sucker for animals.
You will do fine.

Kids... few years ago, just when I thought my nest was going to be empty it filled back up again!   :-)
I've got 2 sons; 1 in Atlanta, the other here at home going to college. Both have been out of the nest, both came back, the oldest moved to Atlanta last fall.
My sweetie... has a son & a daughter, and his 5th grand-baby due in Oct (a girl). I need to get motivated and do some more sewing. I'm making pink & brown nursery items (quilt, sheet, pillow, bumpers, diaper bag, bibs, burp cloths...). I enjoy sewing (quilts & handbags mostly) and lately stringing/knotting glass pearls & making matching earrings.
Kitty is walking better today. Still limping. Not eating dry very well (I think too young) but sure liked the canned I gave him. My avatar is my baby (10 yo Siamese) strictly indoors. I also have 4 adult "fixed" males (3 black, 1 grey) outside. Looks like I'm going to have another grey outside in a few weeks.
I'll keep the no gulping in mind. I know they've been stressing sip, sip, sip. I imagine you were thirsty. I hear I won't get anything until the next day and it will be ice chips 1st.
How are you feeling and getting around now? I guess it's been 9 - 10 days now?
I'm curious when he will okay me to go back to work. I team drive a big truck cross country. The climbing in and out I assume will be the hardest on me. Actually I noticed where your surgeon is. We go through that area all the time, traveling I-20 between Fort Worth and Atlanta.
Better call it a night!

Hi

Everything going well here.   Eating applesause and pudding this week.  Looking forward to soft foods next week.  I go to the gym to walk daily. and some shopping.  Still get tired easily.

My Dr. said if my job was sedintary I could go back after 2 weeks.  However, I am an ER nurse and have to lift patients and such so I am waiting 5 weeks.  They told me no long trips in a car but did not specify how long.  Said if I did have to go on a trip to get out and walk every hour.
Ask when you go in for your pre op.

Hey...

I have applesauce and pudding both already for after next Friday. Jello too. I have also bought several samples of protein shakes and soup, from a couple different websites. The different flavors sound good, but I'm waiting until after to try them.

How long are you walking at a time? Walking is about the only exercise I will get once I get back on the truck. Other than a couple trips around the truck at potty-stops, I figure 2, maybe 3 times a day I can stop and walk for 30 - 45 minutes each.

Just out of curiosity, what multi-vitamin do they have you on?

Hi, I recently joined and just found out my surgery is approved, now it is on to the preops.  No date set yet, but I really wanted to do it in 2 weeks and I don't think it will happen.  I have 6 kids and have 4 kids going to camp for 5 days so it would be the best time for my family.  I am suppose to go back to work on August 20th and the dates just keep getting pushed back farther and farther!
I would love to have a pen pal or 2!  Deb
