Hi Aisha.Glad to hear from you.Hope you are having a blessed day.Well I will start off by telling you a little bit about myself.I am 28 years old.Single with no kids.I have a small marketing business and I am a youth minister and work with children.I was born in Brooksville,Florida and lived there my first 5 years and then moved to Philadelphia with my mom.My mom wants to move back to Brooksville to be near her brothers and sisters and I am moving back to be near my mom.Brooksville is about 2 hours from Jacksonville. As far as how I began my search for WLS.I had a few friends that had Gastric Bypass and they referred me to their doctor.I went to the consult for the bypass but after a while I decided it was not for me.I did research and found another procedure that I liked the best and that was the adjustable gastric band.I did research on the band and on doctors that did the procedure that accepted my insurance and I didn't not find mant in Philadelphia.I would have had to go to New York.I looked through my insurance provider directory for a surgeon and I found a doctor that did the procedure and took my insurance.I called and set up an appointment for my consult and the appoint for set for 4 months later. When my consult date finally came,I met the doctor and his staff and the informed me on the procedure and all the info that I would need. They gave me a list of all the studies that I would have to take to prepare for surgery.I took all of my test and in July I will go on my last test which is the Psych Eval and after that I will be ready for surgery.I will list following things that you can do to start the process.
1.Do research on the different procedures and decide what is best for you(Only you know what you can handle)
2.If you do not have it,get a provider directory manual from your insurance company
3.Find out all the counties, cities, states that you are covered by your insurance(If you want it bad enough, you may have to travel to find the best doctor)
4.Once you find the doctor,do research on him/her.You can always look on this site and ask people who may have had him/her as their surgeon
5.If you have not ever had a medically supervised diet,it is best to ask your doctor to start you on one now, because most insurance companies are going to want you to go on one
The following tests you will have to take before you get a surgery date are:
1.Upper GI
2.Ultra Sound
3.Pulmonary Test(Breathing Test)
4.Medical Clearance(Primary Care fills that out)
5.Cardiac Clearance
6.Chest X-Ray
7.EKG
8.Various Labwork
9.Sleep Study
10.Psychological Evaluation
Its best as soon as you have your consultation and your doctor gives you the prescriptions on all the tests, start scheduling appointments back to back.
If you need any help with finding Florida doctors this site is the best place to start because you can always talk to other members that may have experienced the doctor. If you have any questions or need to talk about your experience with the process I will be happy to help.
Take Care and Good Luck,
Kim
