Topic: RE: surgery date

Hello Suzette!

You are exactly where i was at a week ago!  I am not yet approved for surgery, but hope to be any day, and hope to have my surgery sometime in Nov.
i was having some of the same worries, and everyone here was very nice to try and put my fears at ease.

i finally came to my own conclusion, that i will be so much better off with the surgery.  I might still be in fibro pain, and have all the stuff that comes along with it, but the high bp, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc, will be taken care of, not to mention longer life span (hopefully), as well as being able to physically do so much more in life.

I am learning that it is a terrible syndrome to have to live with, but it could be so much worse, and i am hopeful that someday soon there will be more and new medicines or therapies to help us out!

Good luck!!
Karil

Topic: Checking in and update
Hello Everyone,

just checking int o say "hello".   My paperwork has been submitted, and I am just waiting to hear if my surgery has been approved.

While i am getting ready for a possible surgery date, i will be seeing a pain doctor next week.  I am hopeful that i can get some relief.   The Rheumotologist has not been able to help me, let alone, really diagnose me.
Just wanted to say hey, and thank everyone for their great support, and awesome posts!
Hugs

Topic: RE: How many of us work fulltime?
I work full time as a nursing supervisor and care for my elderly grandmother who lives with me.  I do good to make it through the week.  It.s one day at a time.  Just to think 4 yrs ago I would work all the overtime I could get.   I fear what is ahead of me.  I have always been the one to help everybody and don't know if I will get any of that back in return.  But I just started back on Lyrica so I am optimistic that it will help me!  I have alot of years left to work!

Topic: Fibromyalgia clinic
http://www.fibroandfatigue.com/center_locations.php

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia June of 2008.  This was after having large masses on both ovaries which I had removed along with both ovaries at the age of 35.  Then in May of 2008 I was having chest pain so had a heart cath which was normal.  So at this point I was morbidly obese at a weight of 295 I think.  I have hypothyroidism since I had a thyroidectomy at age 15.  Type 2 Diabetes, Gastritis, Sleep apnea and add a little depression with that  lol   Well finally doctor said I had fibromyalgia june of 2008 after going to her for chronic pain in my arms, hands, shoulders. hips and  neck.  I have always taken ibuprofen with relief.  Because I do have some arthritis in knees and back.  Well once she diagnosed me I didn't believe her.  Thatsthe nurse that I am  lol  So I went to a rheumatologist who agreed with the diagnosis.  And he took me off Lyrica that my doctor had put me on and started me on trazadone. And told me how I needed to eat!  LOL  Like I didn't know how I needed to eat.  Since then I decided to have RNY and have lost 106lbs and the pain is there and probably worse than before.  So the weight was not my problem!  My insurqance wouldn't pay for Lrica anymore so my Doc put me on Neurontin which was a waste of time so Yesterday I started back on Lyrica!  My doc also finaly gave me hydrocodone to take 3 times a day as needed.  Then I have flexeril.  I am on Lexapro 10mg a day and wonder maybe I should have that increased.  But if the Lyrica doesn't work this time or makes me to start gaining weight I was thinking about going to this clinic which the link is above.  The closest one ot me is cleveland.  I was wondering if anyone else had went there or if it is a money making joke!  I just want to be pain free for one day!  Maybe I have to high of expectations...... Can't  wait to here some responses to my post!

Topic: RE: Meds for Fibro
Dear Karil, I have been fighting off a respiratory infection for about three weeks, and have been taking a sugar free cough syrup with guaifenesin in it as an expectorant. I had heard this can help and I actually have started to feel better. So I just bought guaifenesin tablets with 400mg and am taking daily. Not really sure what the doctor that wrote the book reccommends, as I'm not sure of his name. If you are aware of book name, please email me.Thanks. I'm gonna keep trying and see how I feel, I figure it can't hurt. I'll keep everyone informed as to if I feel it helps. You may need to try different meds, but need to give the drugs a chance to work before you move on. Most docs don't allow mobic, you may want to check with your surgeon as, once  you have the surgery most don't want you on any anti-inflammatory meds as stomach much smaller and can more easily cause stomach ulcers. Mine allows you to take celebrex only, which i'm just gonna start tomorrow. Some of your meds may need to change after surgery, but can ask doc when  you go for preop visit. Keep in touch and let us know how you do. Sincerely, JoAnn

Topic: RE: Does it ever feel like something is eating at your bones?
Dear Suzette, I have not trouble with taking pain meds. I take soma and vicodin es. I have to break the vicodin in half to take, as doctor doesn't want me to take any pills larger than an M&M candy. But I have never really had any problems with any meds. I do miss my motrin, helped alot. My surgeon allows pt. to take anti-inflamatory celebrex, which my doctor just got ok'd from my insurance, though I have higher co-pay on it, gonna start tomorrow. Good luck with  surgery, email me with any other questions, be glad to try to answer. Sincerely, JoAnn

Hey Suzette,
I do bring you good news!
After having lost over 300 pounds, the energy level has def. increased in that regard.
I'm off all diabetic meds, blood pressure meds, and sleep apnea seems to have resolved!
In regards to the fibro pain.....in my case the weightloss has NOT helped w/ the pain I'm sorry to say.
There are many positives of this surgery as well as negitives.
You just have to weigh the benefits against the probable issues that may arise from RNY.
Only you can deside if it's for you honey.
huggs to you :)

My PCP should be calling soon, within the next few days on a referral for the pain clinic.

Topic: RE: Can't find the right pain reliever
Thank you hislady.  I am awaiting a referral from my PCP to a pain clinic.
I think it will be my best hope for any pain relief.
Update:  Saw my PCP on Tuesday and he prescribed a morphine IR 100mg x2 daily and morphine 30mg x2 a day as needed for breakthrough pain.
I strongly believe that as RNY'ers we do not absorb the full amount of medication that we swallow orally.
I would like to resort to the fentynal patch.
But my PCP will not prescribe this, only a pain clinic can do this.
On top of all of this, I have a pretty bad case of bronchitis as well....as if the other sh*t was not enough
Upon waking up, I cough up all sorts of icky poo's in the AM.
The rescue inhaler is helping....only just a bit.
I feel lucky that I am able to have the opportunity to go to the pain clinic.   I just pray the new Pain Specialist will be sympathetic to my situation.  Us RNY'ers are a special case...we have special needs, many of which alot of doctors don't want to deal with, mainly it's because they dont want to "step on toes" of any work the gastric bypass
