I was told over 10 years ago I had fibromyalgia but have never done anything because when I told a different doctor I was told I had it he said it was all in my head. Now I am getting ready to have my RNY and my pain in my neck and hips is so bad that I am almost in tears daily.. I am going to see a doctor on Friday and hope that she can help .. but my big question is did losing weight help anyone with the pain they have?

In general it does not help fibro pain which tends to be in all the muscles, kinda like the worst flu you ever had but never goes away. That said it does help by taking the weight off of your joints and just makes life in general better. So you may feel better that way which can help relieve some of the pain whether from fibro or just joint pressure. I've lost close to 100 lbs yet my fibro is every bit as bad as ever and any stress makes it 1000x worse.

You also might want to see a rheumatologist or pain specialist to have them determine if you do actually have fibro. Ten years ago many docs still didn't believe it was a medical problem but now most do and they have some tests that can help them determine if fibro is the problem or if it is something else. Kind of a process of elimination. Good luck to you because if nothing else you should feel better just getting the weight off!

I too have been told that I have fibromyalgia back many years ago. I find that I have flares and when they hit they hit both sides of the body usually and has to run its course. I also know that I have degenerative disk disease and have had surgery for herniated disk. I have episodes of sever pain that last awhile and then goes. The regular routine stiffness is always there. I currently am having a very bad I just want to scream issue with a pinched nerve in my neck and my left scapula from being out of place. I am working with a Chiro currently that I think might help. I don't have surgery until 3/10 having R&Y. My family doctor said to con't with the chiro and lets get my surgery done and then if my issues with neck and scapula are still an issue we will go for another MRI...which I pray I don't have to do...because if we go there I will end up back at my neurosurgeons office who told me when it gets to where I can't stand the pain anymore...the next time he does surgery on me it will be to place rods in my spine.

Anyway with all that said I had lost 108 lbs on WW and reached my ww goal in 2011 with the weight off I admit I felt better but would still have issues with my back! I have now gained about 80 lbs of that back...thus the reason I am having Gastric Bypass. I know that losing weight will make me feel better but I also know it is not going to magically take this pain all away for good.

I have fibro, and weighed 310 or 315 back in 07 when I had the RNY Gastric bypass, and it did help with pain as I lost, the joint pain, but none of the other pains, if anything they appeared worse for the joint pains didn't mask them. So it was a good / bad change. Each person is different, and pray your pain is for the better. I know I liked me better and my moods was better. Now I am 8 years out, looking at needing a revision, lower stoma has stretched out, so nothing is staying in pouch, causing me to be hungry all the time, able to eat more, and have gained weight and don't like me where I am, and joint pains are coming back, haven't told family for they worry enough about my pain they don't need to know about this. My prayers are with you, God bless your surgery and your life journey living with fibro.,

Tammi
