Question regarding WLS and fibro, chronic pain

Ohio Fibromite chiming in, here! I had VSG done on February 1st and totally thought I'd be cruising into weight loss bliss! I had a horrible flare right after surgery and then every couple weeks it seemed I would have another one. I'm 5 months out now and am able to walk and move in ways I haven't done in years. I do take Neurontin, but have never experienced any side-effects from it. I know, I'm a weirdo! So, I just wanted to say that even with the bad flares after surgery, I would do this again in a heartbeat! The flares are fewer in the past month and a half and they don't last as long. I feel better about myself, so I'm happier, which means more endorphins jumping in the mix... which just makes me feel better every day! Good luck, honey! Hope this is the key to you feeling better in the long run!

Hi, I am 33 but can relate. When I was at my top weight, 298, in December of 2009 I decided to get busy. I had been diagnosed with arthritis in my knees, fibro. and pre diab. Oh, and don't forget migraines of course. I had been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and panic attacks. I work full time, although I am daily exhausted and in pain daily. I am on and have been on medication since forever. So, I somewhat feel your pain. Now the good news. I did have RNY surgery last July 2010 and at the time of surgery I weight 264. So, I had lose some on my own. Well, with support of course. Now I am down to 175. Thank you Jesus! So, I can move around easier. The migraines and pain continue. Medications have been altered and help. Mood swings have increased and meds have been changed. It is a day to day battle, but it sounds like you know all about that already. But the surgery has helped so much!  Good luck.

Hello,
I am three years post-op and lost from 278 to 105 and now at 145. My goal weight is 130 and I was doing good for the most part. I do have to get iron infusions since WLS but all in all felt much better. I recently moved here to Germany and started having lots of pain in legs, jaw, neck, back and arms. I felt terriable hurt all the time and sometime can not even move. I have had this headache for I don't even know how long. Doctor said I have fibromyalgia after ruling everything else out. But told me basically it is something I have to deal with. It has been rough. Hurting all the time mood swings like crazy and all the meds just make it worst. They will not do anything but said trial and error on meds but basically its my fault that I need to excersise and destress. My life is stressful and thats just all there is about it. I am a military wife, student and stationed in a country that I have no friends or family in. I can not drive bc of all the meds and some days can't even walk hardly.

I just has WLS last week and I have Fibro too.  I've not taken any meds at all for it and I can't tell if the fatigue is just from surgery or a combination of surgery and fibro.  It looks like I will have to have my left knee operated on for a meniscus problem because I am not able to walk really well right now and I know walking is important right now.  Looks like I'm gonna have to get that cortisone shot after all.  I would sleep all the time if I could.  I have Neurontin for the fibro but have not taken it (or any of the other meds I was on) since coming home from the hospital.  I am fighting fatigue and the "downs" right now as I type this.  My surgeon said very honestly that he didn't know what the surgery would do for the fibro, if anything.  With all the other health issues, I was willing to take the chance.  TBH I don't think there has been any improvement on the fibro so at least I wasn't disappointed there.  Anywho, I wrote all that to say I know about fibro and what it does.  I hope you find relief.  Not sure what I am going to do...may have to go back to my primary doc and see what he says.

Oh my goodness Deb I had to go to the bottom of the page to see if I wrote your comment. We are in the same boat & yes, it sucks being in so much pain!! I am scheduled for my first knee surgery on Aug 30th and I am not looking forward to it. They have such a horrible time controlling my pain. So many pain med's do nothing for me, which makes it really painful. With the Fibromyalgia, both knee's pain and with 1 disk in my back that is totally detearing. I had back surgery on one side & have never had anymore pain there. The disk is the problam. I had the lap-band surgery last year in August and I am not doing as good as I want too.
With the Lyrica & pain meds it is really hard to lose any weigh. I guess I will have to just stop eating to get myself back in contol.
I just wanted to wish you the very best. I am turning 61 yrs old this year and I don't look or feel 60, but here I am. My weigh started off at 273 & I am not 230, but should be down a lot more.
Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone "At ALL"

I had RNY 1 March 2011 and before I went in I was in the middle of a horrible flare. I also have back problems that at that time pain specialists said was Sciatica - worst pain in my life and it lasted until for months. I had a steroid injection end of May and have been ok since. Fibro is still there but not in major flare right now. Started on Neurontin a few weeks ago, seems to help. I have lost 88lbs so far and I can't see where the weight loss had changed the pain or flares but I do have more energy and am able to enjoy time with my dogs and husband more.

I was just wondering if anyone knows if it would be safe for me to take a muscle relaxer, I have fibro and my RNY was on June 28th and I developed severe back pain my last night in the hospital and I still have it.
