Fibromyalgia and Parathyroid Hyperactivity
Do any of my friends with fibromyalgia know if you do or might have an over active parathyroid? Not THYROID- I'm looking for others with an overactive parathyroid - hyperparathyroidism.
I've just been diagnosed. Two symptoms are fatigue and odd muscle pain. Sound familiar???
As you may know our 4 parathyroids glands control the release of calcium in our systems. The results of increased calciumin our systems is...scary. I will see an endocrinologist Tuesday. I'm just wondering if there is any link to this and fibromyalgia?
Thanks for any feedback. If you don't know...do ask your doc to check it...especially after gastric bypass...

I don't have any answers or insight for you, but I have found a great website for Fibromyalgia. They have a great forum that offers lots of information about different symptoms and such. Possibly you will find it helpful as well.

There are 2 types of hyperparathyroidism.
There is primary hyperparathyroidism which is very rare and this is the over production of calcium (calcium level 10.4 or higher) and elevated parathyroid hormone - PTH greater than 65. This type requires treatment by an Endocrinologist who specializes in calcium disorders. You also need to have either a sonogram or CT scan of your parathyroid glands.
The most common type of Hyperparathyroidism is Secondary hyperparathyroidism and that is the type that most of us have - the great majority of weight loss surgery patients as well as the general population due to vitamin D deficiency. You will have a low vitamin D level (less than 30), elevated parathyroid hormone = PTH greater than 65. Some people will still have a high calcium level due to leaking calcium from the bones and into the blood. The treatment for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism is High doses of Dry D3 and increased doses of calcium. This combination should normalize your levels. I had this exact problem and now they are normal.

Hi Kelly,
I still have significant fibro pain. I don't feel quite as fatigued. Unfortunately, my COBRA insurance has been exhausted and I'm unemployed for almost 2 years. So, healthcare takes a back seat to expenses. Its about $200 to run a vitamin D test. I'm putting it off as long as I can! I'll let you know how it goes!
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia long before RNY surgery. I have seen it destroy so many people that I decided to "act as if" I DON"T have it. I just don't want to give into it. I have a pretty high pain threshold and I take amitryptaline at night and that seems to help. The vitamin D, however, I think is helping as well.
Hope that helps!

Dear RBB825,
Thank you for your reply. I met with the endocrinologist and indeed my Vitamin D was low. She said pretty much the same thing, that it is common with RNY. So we just have to wait for the next blood test run to see if it helped or not.
Thanks again for the insight.
