How did Fibro affect your choice of surgery?

Hello,
I have just been approved and will be seeing the surgeon this week.  I have the choice of three surgeries: RNY, LSG (the sleeve), or the Band.
I'm ruling the Band out because my skin (all of me) is so hyper-sensitive that even the thought of having a port freaks me out.
So now I'm trying to decide between the other two.  I believe they are both excellent surgeries, but are you able to take needed medications with RNY?  Right now I'm not on too much, but there's always the "let's try this one to see if it will help" from from my doctor and maybe one (or more) will help...
Please let me know your experiences.  Thanks!

I'm glad you aren't considering the band it's a royal pain. I would choose the sleeve if it were me, for the reason you stated and because of the malabsorption issue. I think there are "some" issues with the sleeve also but there is alot more room to work with it than the RNY.  Lots of meds come in different forms so they can often substitute. It's best to talk this over with your doc and your pharmacist, actually the pharmacist often knows more than the doc. Best of luck on whatever you choose.

I had my DS surgery before I was diagnosed with FM and CFS.  I am thankful that I am able to continue eating a normal diet, but even more than that, I am thankful I am able to continue to take NSAIDs.  Something you are not able to do with a RNY.  You need to really look at your lifestyle and determine whether having just a restrictive surgery is going to work for you, or if you are going to need the malabsorption to help you keep the weight off.   Please consider researching the DS, even if your doctor doesn't do them, there are plenty out there that do.  Be willing to switch doctors if necessary.  Good luck to you in your research.

I saw the surgeon today and after a good discussion with him decided to go with the sleeve.  He said there are a lot of studies underway of how medications are being absorbed with RNY but they're beginning with the biggies (meds for heart disease, arthritis, etc), so that's too long-term to help give me any information.  He's only had one other patient that had fibro and he/she ended up choosing the sleeve as well for similar reasons he said.  So I'm on the wait list now and it should be no more than 3 months until the day.

Pam,
It's too bad you didn't have a choice.  Are you happy overall with the RNY though?

Julie,
I'm in Canada (Alberta) and we go through our provinicial health care to get the surgery.  We're lucky in our province that there is the choice of the 3 surgeries, as some provinces don't do the surgery at all, and some have fewer choices and more restrictive requirements from what I read.

Thanks all for your responses.
