Migraine Headaches
Does anyone here have a history of migraines. If so, has WLS made a difference in how frequently or how bad the headaches are? What kinds of meds do you take that are not NSAIDs? Do you take any vitamins or suplements that help? I'm looking at WLS in Feburary and migraine pain managment is high on my list of concerns. Thanks.
Hi!
I was just diagnosed with migranes and am taking Frova as needed? I am not sure what WLS is or NSAIDS is? I have not been taking any vitamins to help as I am just beginning to be treated for migranes. I do know a great doctor in NJ that helps with migranes without the use of medication, however he is very expensive and does not except insurence. If you would like to know his name let me know. People littlerally come form all over the world to see him. He is a fantastic Dr. Let me know if your interested! Good luck!

WLS = weight loss surgery
NSAID = non-steriodial anti-inflamitory drug
I'm happy with my doctor and I couldn't afford a trip to NJ let alone a doctor that only takes cash. :) I was just curious if the surgery will make any difference to how bad my migraines are. I'll be having surgery sometime Jan/Feb next year.

I have chronic migraines as well and will be having my surgery around the Jan/Fed time frame. Both my surgeon and my PCP feel that the weight loss will help. The theory is that when the weight comes off and hopefully improves and/or cures my sleep apnea, high blood pressure, etc that will make a difference with the migraines. I'm hoping they are right
I am 33 and have had migraines since I was in middle school. I was diagnosed in high school. I have been on all kinds of medications over the counter, prescriptions, vitamins, etc. Currently, I am taking topomax 100mg twice a day, Co Q10 vitamin 100 twice a day, Magnesium twice a day, Vitamin B Complex daily, Prozac 60mg daily, flexiril 5mg daily at night and Imitrex 100mg as needed. This has been the best combination for me so far. My neurologist started me on it and my regular dr has continued it. Also, I take the birth control that makes you only have your period every 3 months that keeps the hormones down. Hope this helps. I was taking Lyric as well to help with fibromyalgia.
I have had horrible, curled up on the floor, migraines since I was 12. They last for days. My doctor put me on Cymbalta years ago to help prevention. Recently, my doc gave me samples of many meds to try during one to see which worked. MAXALT - it's gone in 15 minutes. It melts in your mouth and migraine is gone. What I usually do is if I feel one coming on, I take Excedrin Migraine. If that doesn't do it, it's the Maxalt. There are no side effects.
Also - since I started Neurontin a few months ago for the FMS (miracle drug) pain, I have not had any that have required the Maxalt. Maybe the Neurontin helps???

Well I've had migraines for the past 14 years and my Dr also had high hopes that WLS would help.....well, I'm now 19 months post RnY, down 90 lbs, no sleep apnea, no high blood pressure, but unfortunately - no change in my migraines. At first we thought I wouldn't see a change until I was done losing all my weight, because during weight loss the body sees that as a "trauma"...but I have stayed the same now for about 5 months and still no change.
I get migraines about every other day - at least. Headaches daily. About every 3-4 months I end up in the hospital getting a shot of Toradal & Morphine, which knocks me out for 2 days straight (just happened on Monday). I have been to the neurologist at the Mayo Clinic and they just can't seem to figure anything out. I've been on every drug, herb, vitamin, you can think of at one point in time. My insurance even approved Botox, but that only made things worse.
Right now I have Relpax for my attacks, Vicodin for pain and Percocet for the BAD ones....for me it's just come to a point of making it through the day, hoping I don't get another one, & trying to make sure I don't have rebound headaches from all the meds I do take!!!
Hope things work out better for you......and let me know if you find something new that works for you! I'm always on the look out!

Wow. Serious stuff Marion. Sorry to hear it. I'm 5 days post op now and I have had a migraine everyday since the day of surgery. Thank goodness for Lortab. That has helped. I even slept my first full night's sleep last night. Blessed sleep, no better gift for health. Thanks to all who commented. I'll update if things change. I've got my fingers crossed.
