does wls help any at all?
Sorry hon but I think the general feeling is that it really doesn't help with the fibro pain. Now if some of the pain is from arthritis it can help with that pain. It (WLS) has to help just in general by having less body to haul around but don't expect any relief from the fibro. I didn't find that lyrica helped me much and it caused weight gain but cymbalta has been helpful for me. It's so individual as to what helps, I don't think any one thing works for everybody. Feel free to post and vent anytime it's always good to see new folks!
Weight loss surgery doesn`t help with Fibro pain. They don`t really know what causes the pain and the only thing other than drugs that helps me is exercise. I know sometimes its hard to get moving but I refuse to take the strong meds the Drs. want to give for fibro. They have to many side affects. I tpld my Dr. why should I take something that could possibly kill me. I would trather have the pain and live with it. I was diagnosed with it back in the early 90`s but have been suffering with it since I was in my 30`s I`m now 62. I will make my days as comfortabl as I can and keep myself moving. On flare up days I will relax
Life is an adventure. Just keep going
WLS did not take my Fibro away but I believe the weight loss and the exercise I am doing has really helped. I still have flare-ups but I don't think the ones I have are as bad. I do water exercises and try to walk at least 2 miles everyday (sometimes more and sometimes a little less). I still have to take several meds but they haven't changed since before surgery so something has helped and the only thing I can attribute it to is the WLS and exercise.
I do not think it makes the fibro better. In fact I have wondered if it made mine worse as I did not get my diagnosis until a year after WLS. But, I will tell you that I believe that I do more since I had WLS & tend to over do it...which causes pain flares. I have to pace myself & really listen to my body. When I do, I think in some ways I am better than I would have been pre-op. But, I still would not say that it got rid of the pain associated with fibro or the chronic fatigue. It is sometimes worse than ever.
I know I still have a lot to learn about the condition. I have wondered for many years if I had it, but it was not until about a year ago (after getting skinny) my doctors too took me seriously. No more blaming it on my being over wt at least!
Good luck!

I find that I have less flare ups because I am not carrying around as much weight but FM is an inflammatory disease so as the others have said weight loss won't relieve it. I live a very sedentary lifestyle. Exercise is really supposed to be good for it but a walk around the mall can leave me hurting for several days and I just refuse to work through the pain. I take medication and hate doing it but do get some relief that way.

My mom and I both have fibro and arthritus. I also have neurological pain, feels like someone is cutting me with an electrified scalpel, thank goodness it lasts only a few seconds. I know it hurts to move but I have to tell you, when you stop exercising, the pain is soooo much worse. I refuse to take pain meds, don't want to trade food addiction for being a drug addict. I do have a type of tens unit, an interferential unit. It sends electrical signals through your muscles. I use it constantly and in several different areas. It really helps the major pains but it still hurts when someone touchs me.
Good luck and keep moving, you stop moving and you stop living.

remember that normal weight people have fibro also it is not just a diesase or the obese. I was reminded of that when I when to my Fibro specialist and saw noral sized women ther for treatment. Then problem is we can not move enough to burn the calories off so gain weight for that reason. I was first diagnosed at 160# 15+ years ago now I struggle at 292 today. Worried about all the meds I am on when I do have my surgery some are bigger than the out let will be. I will finally get to make my appointment with my surgen after my visit #6 to discuss my concernsin 3 weeks.
