Hello,
I don't even know where to begin with my story, so I just want to introduce myself for now. I've been feeling so depressed, and hopeless the last few days. And then I found this site last night. Now I'm thinking there might be some hope after all.

I'm a 50 yr. old woman with more than 100 excess pounds on my 4' 11" frame. I'm pre-diabetic and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in Feb. Because I'm a recovering addict my doctor won't prescribe any narcotics for pain. My drug was pot and I've never had a problem with hard drugs or pills.

He referred me to a rheumatologist *****ferred me to a pain clinic. They turned me away, telling me they don't deal with fibromyalgia. WHAT? I can't hardly believe that. So I'm pretty much stuck living with this awful pain.

I know if I could lose this weight it would help a lot. And I know how important gentle exercise is for fibro, but it's just so hard when you can hardly walk because of the pain. To make problems worse, I can't stop eating. I know I'm doing it for comfort and I can't stop. I would like to get some help for that too, but unfortunately because I don't have medical insurance or thousands of dollars to pay for it, I'm left to deal with that on my own as well.

I'm not usually a negative person and I've been very active my whole life in my recovery from the incest that occurred through most of my childhood. I've worked my whole life on my food and weight issues as well. But since being struck with the fibro, it made that mountain climb ten times more difficult for me.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I am very interested for the first time in my whole life in having some type of weight loss surgery. I'm just terrified that they are going to turn me down because of my problems with compulsive eating.

I'm on disability and on Medicare and Medicaid with Buena Vista (drug company).

I'm glad to be here and hope I can get some answers as well as encouragement and support. I am looking forward to making some friends who can relate to my issues and hope that I can reach out to others in need of help as well.

Thanks for taking the time to read my lengthily post. I'm off now to do some more profile set-up stuff.

Welcome, welcome you've come to the best spot here for help.So sorry you are being shuffled around can you go back to the rheumy and see if he'll treat you since the pain clinic turned you away. They may have not wanted to to treat a recovering addict, not at all fair but sometimes happens. There are several drugs that might help that aren't narcotic and may also help with the depression. I didn't even realize I had depression until I started cymbalta for my fibro and started feeling soooo much better mentally. Your primary care doc can prescribe these too, there is also lyrica and savella for fibro.
I wish I could say weight loss surgery helps fibro but it really doesn't, it will help joint pain and of course just help in general getting the weight off. I would suggest you browse around here and check out all the surgery types to see what interests you.
I would strongly urge you to investigate Overeaters anonymous to help deal with your food addiction. No matter what type surgery you might have they only help the stomach not the head, in fact some of them tend to result in crossover addictions so you do need to get help with that first. Most folks that have WLS are addicted to food to some extent, some more and some less. I'm so glad you came here to us and I'm sure others will comment too. Stay strong and keep reading all you can, information is a mighty weapon!

Welcome you have hope. May I share with you what I am finding out? I am of your era 57 yo also abused and always had to sit and be quiet. Also am obese and have fibromyalgia and lymphedema.  Having gastric bypass has been such a blessing. I am learning to eat better and finding that vitamins and supplements are helping me. We always ate the wrong things and over time we depleted our bodies of important nutrients and caused our pain . I too have doctored with pain in my joints and now rt. shoulder. Have been given lots of drugs that don't help. With research and OH I am getting better. Now I know I was depleted in magnesium and taking the wrong kind that made my symptoms worse and vit D. The best vitamins that are absorbed the best are citrate. Since I have been taking 2 adult multiple vitamins and calcium citrate 1500mg and magnesium citrate 800-1200mg and chilated iron 27mg and 1000u vit D  a day I am feeling better.  I would hardly be able to walk by the end of the day with pain and I am a nurse who works 12 hr shifts of constant motion. Since I have been doing this since my surgery11/09 the rash on my legs is gone and the numbness in my arms is better and my joints don't hurt like they did. Now when they do start I know I either haven't drank enough caffienefree fluids or missed my vitamins. Start slow one day at a time . I now only take 1 celebrx a day and maybe 2 tylenol a day. I also go to the pool and do water exercise when I can. It helps me rest better. You are going in the right direction by being on the board and asking for guidance. A whole new life is awaiting you. Good Luck!

Welcome.  Sorry to hear about all your pain.  We can all relate to that.  I hope that with you being on Medicare you can get your WLS paid for.  That may help with some of your pain, but I don't thing (for me anyway) that it helps with the fibro pains.

I know without my pain management doctor keeping me on a regimine of medications (narcotics) I wouldn't be able to work or hardly get out of bed.  I do hope you find a doctor who will work with your pain issues and just monitor it very closely.  I don't know if the fact you did one drug makes you an automatic addict to another type of drug.  I guess that's what they might be afraid of.

Don't give up.  Come here and vent/talk/ask questions.  Keep pushing and asking and demanding with your healthcare providers and medicare to get the treatment you need to feel closer to healthy!  You have to take charge of your medical needs and don't stop until you get the help you know you need!  Took me over 2 1/2 years to get the right dx and on medications that are beginning to work for me.

As hard as it is, just keep pushing forward and know that you have folks here cheering you on!

Welcome to the best thing I have found also.

I have an addictive personality.  If 1 cup of coffee tastes good 2 will be better.
If one martini is good, 2 is better.
So I refrain from alcohol and I am super super careful of the Vicodin.  Without it I would be in bed 3 days out of 7 at least.

The other posters are dead on.  Your PCP can prescribe cymbalta and lyrica which are the first choice of fibro drugs.  They can also go to sevella if lyrica is not feasible.
They also can go to something for the pain and muscle relaxants for sleeping.

The vitamin regimen of RNY is strict.  But if you are compliant, they are great.  You actually feed yourself something that makes you feel better.

I take extra Vit D 1000 IU twice a day.
I take chewable adult vit in AM and one a day for women at night.
I also do 500mg of sublingual Vit B12 three times a day.

Having the weight off will help.   Lyrica might put weight on - if that happens to you, just request another drug - sevella I've heard works ok.

Good luck on your journey.

Tink
