What pain meds do you take?

I just found this board, don't know why I didn't notice it sooner.  I have fibromyalgia and am praying that since RNY it will get better.  I can't stand the pains I get in my feet and other muscles.  I am currently taking 20 mg of oxycontin twice a day for pain.  My doctor suggested I take an increased dosage but I declined as I do not want to build any more dependence on it.

Is there something out there less addictive that works better?  My doc put me on lyrica at one point but i didn't find it was helpful.

What do you do to relieve your pain?

Myself the only thing that truely helps IS the narcotics. I take Cymbalta 2x a day, a time release morphine 2x a day and  low dose oxycodone 4x a day. There are other drugs besides the lyrica like the Cymbalta I take and  Savella. For some people muscle relaxers help also. Don't give up, keep trying meds till you find what works for you. Also read up on fibro so you are armed with the info you need to push for the best treatment you can get.

I also had hopes that with this surgery the fibro would just ...go away.  And for a while it seemed like it had.  Then reality set in.    I am currently on Lyrica...which doesn't seem to help, until I stop taking it!  Then I can't wait to get back on it!! I have also tried Requip.  I take Endocet and Flexeril.  Anti-depressants help; my doc says that GOOD sleep is key, so I am also on Trazadone.  Hope you can find what works for you, and soon.  God be with you.

Hi there...
My fibro has gotten worse since I've had surgery.
Im afraid its not good news...alot of folks don't find relief in having weight loss surgery for fibro pain.
I am currently taking:
Lyrica 150mg x3 a day
Opana 20mg x1 in the morning
Opana 10 mg IR as needed for breakthrough pain
Opana 40mg x1 in the evening
So far this regimen has been working.
I am currently with a fab pain doctor who is monitoring me closely and we are doing some holistic methods such as pepermint extract dabbed under the nose when I take my pain meds, and body work in the form of massage and meditation.
All opiates are addictive phyiscally.  Once you have been on them your body does get addicted, but you can mentally NOT be addicted.
It can be a slippery slope, one I have to keep a close eye on.
Take care...

Currently I am taking

Morphine 30mg Extended Release twice a day
Morphine 15mg 3 times a day in between the Extended Release
Lyrica 75 mg 2 x a day
Welbutrin XL 150mg  1x day
Welbutrin XL 300 mg  1x day
Clonazepam .5mg 1x day
Effexor ER 150mg 2  1x day
Remeron 30 mg for sleep

It helps...but it does not take the pain away...especially Rt leg and foot, and Lft side of neck and shoulders.  As long as the pain is mostly tolerable... I usually am at about 7 on a pain scale 1-10.  And to me that is tolerable.  I do not want to add more meds or increase the strength of them.  I do not want to be a walking Zombie...I want to enjoy life.

I am really hoping that losing the weight will help.  But, if nothing else...I know it will help a lot of my other problems.

Im currently on 75mg Lyrica 3x a day and Cymbalta.  It seems to help some.  I definately cannot take the Lyrica alone, it gives me terrible ADD symptoms.  Anyway, i also found that aqua therapy helps so much because of the warm water and your muscles are working in a different way.

Down 143 lbs., my fibro also has become worse since surgery.  I think this is due to the fact that physically I am able to do more, but this seems to just bring on more pain.  I am currently taking Cymbalta (no fibro pain relief from it, but probably a good antidepresant for me) and oxycodone since my hip replacement two months ago.  Not only has the oxycodone helped with the post-op hip and sciatic pain (caused by surgery), but also have fould it to help with the fibro pain.  To take the edge off of all the pain I've had to take 20 mg. every 4 hours, 4 to 5 times a day.  I've tried to take less that the 4 pills at a time following surgery, but the med just wears off sooner.  My PCP referred me to the pain management group to see if I could replace it with something else since she felt this to be too large a quantity of pills.  I went to pain management yesterday, and was basically told that they don't prescribe and that she wouldn't recommend ANY narcotic for fibro - also she planned on emailing my doc to take me off the oxycodone.  I was floored.  I have had fibro for 25 years and hurt so bad.  It has always been flared up following surgeries and I'm sure the post-op hip pain has contributed.  My quality of life is so diminished due to the fibro pain, not to mention a head MRI ordered by a neurologist I a few months ago that showed "accelerated brain atrophy for age. I'm 49 - I didn't want to ask her how old my brain was!  She had no answers for me of why this was occurring.  I've since read some fibro literature that stated that the brain atrophy is related to being in a chronic pain state.

I headed back to the fibro doc next week to see if I can try something else beyond the P****er excercise, relaxation techniques, etc., I do on a regular basis.  I work full time and try and maintain a home with my two sons, ages 15 and 20.  It all just seems like too much right now....

Sort of depressing reading these posts. I am due to have RNY on 5/17. I was, too, hoping that my fibro would get better. I suffer so badly from this damn illness, too. I'm no longer able to work FT and can't find PT in my field. Losing my home after 17 years, the Sherif's Sale is coming up in June.

Anywho - I take Cymbalta 60 mg 1x/day, Lyrica 100 mg 3x/day, Diclofenac 20 mg 2x/day, Tramadol every 4 hours. The Tramadol is just about as effective as the Oxycodone for me and is not a narcotic. I still take Oxycodone 40 mg once before bed time to help me get to sleep. I still wake up every 2 hours from pain. I was on Seroquel for sleep - but they took me off of it as it increases appetite. I have found that I actually eat more now that I'm off of it.

Does morphine actually help more than Oxycodone? If so, I think I may need to try that.

Try Tramadol anyway, it's less addictive and a non-narcotic.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

I wasn't diagnosed until after my surgery, but the doc thinks I had it long before.

Wow January was a rough month.  I finally had to go to the doc to see what was wrong end of January when I cried just to get out of bed in the morning.

I am now on:

Cymbalta   60 mg 2x a day
Lyrica   300mg 2 x a day
Vicodin 5/100 as needed - yesterday it was every 6 hours.

My right leg and foot aren't helped with this.  Nor is my left shoulder down to my boobage.  The first time I had the pain right above my left breast, I thought I was having a heart attack.  The pain was so intense for 2 whole days even with Vicodin.

I'm getting very depressed with the way I'm feeling on the meds, but I know I will be in bad pain if I go off of them.

I am seeing that others take a lower dose of Lyrica more times a day.  Perhaps I will suggest that.   Less at a time in the daytime and stay on the 300 at night.

I'm sure glad I found this forum.  I'm going crazy with no one to talk to on this new stranger in my life.

I've been off and on the OH website for 4 years. I've just found this forum and I'm so thankful.  I am taking:
Cymbalta - 30 mg 2 x daily (I've been on this for my depression for about 6 years.  After WLS doctor changed to the 30 mg 2 x daily - instead of 60 mg. 1 x daily.)
Buspirone - 10 mg 2 x daily (added about six months ago to boost the effects of the Cymbalta for my depression.)
Norco - 10-325 mg 2 x daily (just started on this last week.  I take it when I get up because I'm in so much pain.  Then I have to take it 6 hours later.  I need it sooner, but I wait.  Problem is, then I don't have anything to take at night and that is a problem.  I have intense pain that will wake me up and I'll be in tears.)
Ultram - 100 mg. (I've had this medication for about 6 months to help with headaches.  Since we can't take NSAIDS and Tylenol does nothing for me, my PCP prescribed this.  My pain doctor said they are fine to take for a headache as long as it's at least 3 hours after the Norco.)

I'm worried about becoming addicted.  I'm also worried about what the pain meds will do to my liver.  I am just in the process of getting things to a place they are managed.
