Hello, I know its been a long time
Hi all, I know it's been a while for me posting. I'm not sure at this point on if I'm having WLS or not right now. Going back a little for those who may not know, I have had fibro for a while, actually diagnosed May of 07. Last spring I also got diagnosed with Lyme disease. I was trying to get a VSG and my doctor would not touch me until the Lyme was gone.
Okay so fast forward I had a Pic line and IV antibiotics for a little over 2 months something just didn't feel right, finally got an ultra sound done of my arm, I had a blood clot so I had to go to the ER and was admitted, they pulled my line and the blood clot went away. So then I went thru a period where although I wasn't feeling the greatest, as far as fibro goes, I was doing a little better than usual. Well fall and winter set in and forget it pain city. So I am having constant pain my rhuemy pretty much said she couldn't help me anymore and refered me to a pain management group. I go see them tomorrow. So here is my main question to you all:
My primary took blood a few days ago and said she doesn't see any trace of Lyme, (which doesn't suprise me becasuse you can have Lyme and unless you are testing very specific) or using IGenix lab, then results can come back inconclusive. So anyway...my primary said to me today, you know, your are almost 100 pounds over weight (like I didn't know it) and I'm sure if you have surgery and loose all that weight your fibro will be gone. Now I have been on these boards way too long and have heard way too many times that lossing weight does NOT cure Fibro. Can anyone here confirm my thoughts? Weight loss may make me feel better in general but the fibro pain is still there????

Hi there I just answered your PM and will answer here too. You are 1000% correct that weight loss will not cure the fibro! I can't believe how ignorant some docs are about this subject, if we as regular people can investigate this disease and find out what it involves I don't understand why they can't! This is a muscle and nerve disorder and has nothing to do with weight. Being healthier can only help in general but I had fibro just as bad years ago when I was skinny so I can say for sure it makes no difference. I think in the post below I put a couple of good books, you might do some investigatin and show the doc what the situation really is. Good luck with the pain management group, mine has been a God send.
I had gastric bypass in 5/03. I went from 308 and size 30/32's to a current 145 and size 10 petite. I've had Fibro as long as I can remember; probably since my teens or early 20's.
When I first lost the weight 6 years ago, people always said to me, "You must feel so much better, so much more energetic." Well, I don't, with the exception of being able to walk without pain in my feet and knees. Otherwise, I ache all over all of the time. I have no energy, and I have never gotten inspired enough to get off the couch.
I have all the other fibro symptoms as well:
migraines
depression
carpal tunnel syndrome
TMJ
Pain Med Addiction
Yes, Fibro sucks, WLS doesn't cure it, but it sure did help a lot of other things:
I haven't broken a toilet in over 6 years
People don't stare at me in public places
I can have my picture taken with my family, and attend family functions without fear.
Clothes are MUCH cheaper
I'm not the fatest person in the room (or anywhere near it) anymore
I don't have to sleep hooked up to a machine to help me breathe.
I don't care if I eat or not anymore. (I've switched addictions unfortunately.)
Anyway, good look to you, no matter what you decide is best for you. I'm just glad I did it, and I've never regretted it for a second.

I am "in process" trying to get WLS. I have had fibro since my teens..I weigh 370lbs and with some really hard wor****ep it in "remmisssion" as I like to call it. So ya being overweight doesn't help certain joint dysfunction, inflammation or pain but it is not the reason for fibro and losing it all will not be the solution. AS hard as work sometimes, the fibro can still rear it's ugly head but I have learned some coping skills, dietary restrictions, supplements etc.. but I have not taken any meds for fibro in years..It is hard at times but i made me realize how much of fibro was related to diet and also my mental well being..long drawn out story to explain all the stuff I do to keep it in remission
but just so u know..it can be done even when your BMI is 55..I also got rid of my fibroids and cured my back pain..funny western docs just think oh she's crazy..until they see my b4 and after u/s and xrays then they ask what did I do?..there is no 'magic pill' every case of fibro is different
