I am on cymbalta and having surgery on Monday. Do you swallow the cymbalta capsule whole or open it? I am at a loss as to how to take it. Both of my doctors seem confused about it. Anyone still taking it after RNY? I am so scared of a bad flare up after surgery. Anybody with advice it is greatly appreciated. Danielle

According to my pain specialist he said to be sure to leave the capsule intact because it's a time release drug and needs to be in the capsule, so I've always taken it that way. You might ask your pharmacist they should know for sure how to take it. Sometimes they know lots more than the docs!

I take cymbalta, i was not aware it is time relase.  It is available in delayed release, but not all cymbalta is like that.  I had surgery on the 10th of november, and at first i broke it open and ate it with applesauce.  Then at the 2nd week post op, i started taking my 30 mg 3 times a day.  Cause they are smaller.  Also, at week 2 i had a possibliity of infection in a seroma i developed at my largest incision site, and so i had to take levaquin daily and those are much bigger than my cymbalta 60 mg.

Hope this helps, good luck!!!  You should be fine with taking cymbalta either way you choose to.

I too  am on Cymbalta for fibromyalgia.  My doctor and nut both said if it is in a capsule then you just take it.  Don't open it.  That is what they told me.  Some people say they hurt worse after surg.  I didn't other than I couldn't sleep on my side for longer than 2 hours.  That was it.  Hope this helps.

I took Cymbalta for over a year for my FM, and don't remember having too much relief.

I will tell you, you def. need to stay aware of your side effects.  I have all but lost 100% of my desire for sex, was grumpy and very moody, and I found that I just felt blah.  I didn't feel great, but I didn't feel bad.
I decided to come off of the meds and let me tell you - IT WAS TORTURE!!!!  Once you come off of them, you will never go back on them!!!  You will be amazed at what they are doing to your body!!!  The withdrawl symptoms where worse than anything I could have ever imagined!!  I am a pretty strong person - I quit smoking cold turkey after 24 years of smoking - I had a hard time, but compared to coming off Cymbalta that was a piece of cake!!!

Good luck to you all taking Cymbalta.
