I suspect Fibro- obstacle for WLS?

Howdy,

In my quest to find out if WLS is possible for people with Lupus I came across Fibromyalgia info.  After reading the symptoms I am CONVINCED that I have Fibro instead. I just couldn't believe the Lupus DX; it didn't fit me unless I crammed the symptoms in!  I felt like I was faking Lupus you know?  I'll have to go to the rheumatologist for official word-

My question is: has fibromyalgia affected anyone's insurance or surgery approval?  And do most fibro/lupus people get VSG?  I hear the RNY is not friends with anti-inflammatories....

Welcome! Yep it's always nice to know exactly what you have. I don't know of anyone who was denied because of fibro, in fact in some cases it can be a qualifying co morbidity depending on the insurance co. Personally I would suggest the VSG for anyone who doesn't want the malabsorption and associated issues. I have a band and it just hasn't worked for me partly because of the fibro. I can't get in enough exercise to accomplish any weight loss. I also have other mobility problems and lung disease so that contributes to the problem. With the band you either have to be a junk food junkie or a volume eater to lose, at least that's my opinion. You HAVE to be able to exercise or the band is ridiculously slow. I wish you good luck on getting a correct diagnosis and I would highly recommend the VSG.

You can also go the lap band route if you don't have huge amounts of weight to lose.  I'm trying the band out and I've got about 150lbs to lose.  I just have sooooo many problems going in that I didn't want to risk doing anything permanent like rearranging my insides, which is hard to reverse.  I've had fibro for 23 of my 34 years now and I know well what is going to send me into a tailspin.

Fibro and lupus are very closely related so it's entirely possible you have fibro and not lupus.  A rhumie should be able to tell the two apart no problem.

My surgeon said that there is a correlation between the VSG and fibro.  it's supposed to help.  I have fibro and I began to have a lot more issues a while back with pain & tiredness consistently more than usual.  My PCP ran blood tests that came back positive for Lupus  but with further testing we found that that was false.  I was later diagnosed with rheumatoid arthitis,.  I definitely plan on having the VSG so that I can take pain meds!!!

I too have Fibromyalgia and was taking Lyrica until about 3 months ago. The FDA approved Savella for treating Fibromyalgia recently and it's working like a charm for me plus its not an Nsaid.

Savella is an FDA-approved treatment for fibromyalgia.1 Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and additional symptoms which may make it difficult to work or to perform everyday activities. Savella is a type of medication known as a dual reuptake inhibitor (also known as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, or SNRI).1

Savella is not used to treat depression, but it acts like medicines that are used to treat depression (antidepressants) and other psychiatric disorders.
