Cymbalta - how to take after pouch?

I've been taking cymbalta pre and post op.  I've tried with the capsule in tact and without.  Both ways I get a pouch ache.  I don't seem to be getting relief from it anymore either.  Since it is a capsule and extended release, I'm wondering if it is to no avail because I open the capsule.  Anyone else running into this problem?  What have you decided to do?

After reading on here that is isn't good to take cymbalta and lexapro (celexa) together I called the pharmacist and verified it.  I am on both and I guess that is not good.  I'm supposed to wean off the cymbalta immediately now.  Funny how doctors stick together even when they make a big error.  Trying to say that the pharmacists are wrong.  Excuse me, that is there specialty.  I went to double check with another pharmacist just to be sure and they verified it.  Don't take the two together.

Wow...Hi...I'm new to this forum. I have had fibro for11 yrs now. I'm on Lyrica, Vicodin and Oxycotin for the pain. For the depression I'm on Wellbutrin and Zoloft. I take the Wellbutrin in the morning and the Zoloft at night.
I am finding that the Lyrica (I've taken it pre and post RNY procedure) isn't helping keeping the pain in check...even with the Vicodin and Oxycotin. I used to be able to say that the edge was taken off so I could function but now even that's not the case. I was thinking about trying the Cymbalta but if it's not working for you or other's that I've read on here then I'm not going to waste my time with it. I wish they would come up with SOMETHING to take this pain away. My pain started just under my shoulder blades and upper back...within 6 months it had taken over my body. Sunny days are good for me...still in pain but not as much...rainy, snowy days...forget it...I end up in bed usually crying my eyes out. Which isn't good when you're raising a 9 yr old boy. Exercise doesn't help me...losing the weight hasn't helped me...is there anything out there that will??? I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in how and what I'm feeling. Very gentle hugs to you and everyone else on this forum.

I've had really good results from the cymbalta myself. I know some folks have had bad side effects but so far I haven't. I'm on a medium dosage and slowly working to a higher one because it does loose effect after awhile and I need a larger dose but I still have a ways to go before I max out on it. There is also a new drug called Savella for fibro. Quite often we have to keep switching drugs to keep them effective. My pain doc said there are 2 more drugs in the works, so they are trying to get relief for us!

Hi Jacqui,
Welcome to the fibro forum.  Where if you can't find relief/support here where else can you go.  Anyway, I have been using the Durgesic Fentanyl patch 25mcg, and Norco 10/325mg for the break through pain.  On top of that I use Cymbalta 60mg.  It seems to be working pretty well for me.  I have bad days (Saturday was a doozy) but mostly good days.  I was taking regular Vicodin and that was a joke.  Since we don't benefit from all of our meds we need to take more than the average person.  So my stupid doctor I had before kept lowering my dose on my Vicodin.  Get this, he had me taking 1 tablet every 24 hrs.  I told him he needs to find another profession cuz he isn't helping people and he made an oath.  Three days later I received a notice in the mail that he was retiring.  hahha, I didn't do it.  But I finally got my meds under control.  I really don't know if the cymbalta helps because of the other meds I take.  I need a strong antidepressant the Cymbalta isn't strong enough.  So I might stop taking that, plus it is expensive.   But ask your doctor, (if you aren't in a pain management clinic, I suggest you try to get into one.  They aren't afraid to prescribe C5 catagory meds.  Hope this helps and hope to see you on here again. Hi...I hope you had a good day today. Mine was so so. Sometimes I don't know what's worse...the fibro pain or the healing pain...smh. I do know when they both cut up on me I'm flat on my back in bed. Nothing and I mean nothing touches the pain. It literally gets so bad that my body shuts down and I end up asleep for a couple of hours. When I wake up it isn't as bad as when it shut down but it's like it's telling me..."don't worry...I haven't left you....and just to let you know that here's a spasm for you!" Seems my bad days outweigh my good days right now...
My doctor told me that I have the worse case that she's ever seen and she's treated quite a few. But she does listen to me at least when I tell her things aren't working right and we need to try something else. I can't even imagine only being allowed 1 pain med every 24 hours...that's INSANE!!! That doctor needed to retire with the quickness!! I know that they're afraid that we'll become addicted to the pain meds...but can somebody please tell me how do you become addicted to something that doesn't work???? I could see the concern if there was marked relief from the dosage prescribed....but when they don't give you enough what do you do?? I tried pain management clinics...they wanted me to find a "happy place" to go to when the pain gets to be unbearable...I told them I couldn't stay there that long because I'm raising my kids...lol...and what's the sense in going there when the pain follows you anyway??
I'm very glad I found this forum and I plan to visit it quite often...at least it's a place where I can vent and people here understand what I feel and going through.  Good night my new fibro family.

I spoke with my doctor last night and she said they prescribe cymbalta and lexapro (or celexa) together all the time for fibro patients because we are different than the average person.  NO KIDDING.  Anyway, because I was afraid of the combo we are weaning me off of cymbalta and we will increase the celexa to 60mg.  I'm nervous about this as I already feel terrible all the time and I hope I can continue to work with the change.  We'll see.

Jacqui, sorry to hear that you are in so much pain.  I hope they come up with something for you soon.  I can't take the pain meds because I am allergic so I just have to tough it out which is really hard sometimes.  Take good care of yourself and keep posting.

I'm not able to take Cymbalta because I'm bipolar. I take Neurtontin, Opana, and Vicodin for breakthrough pain. After surgery I'll be on the patch because the Opana I'm taking is ER. Opana has worked really well for me at making me more comfortable! Hopefully you can find some relief!
