wls and fibro
Hi everyone, What I seem to hear the most from people is, once you lose the weight your fibromyalgia will get better. Boy, wouldn't that be great! But I try to explain that, although the weight loss will help with foot, leg, lower back pain and less stress on joints, it doesn't matter if your a size 2 or 32, fibromyalgia causes pain. Most people that do not have it or know someone close with it, doesn't understand that. I still feel people think we make it up in our heads. I do hope however, that with the weight loss does come some relief of pain. Has anyone noticed that after their weight loss? Sincerely, JoAnn
Not to be a fly in the Vaseline..but I feel worse after losing 100 pounds. Before all of my pain was attributed to my weight. Only after my weight loss was I diagnosed with Fibro ( I have probably had it for 13 yrs). My joints and muscles seem to be having a hard time adjusting to the lighter me. So for me, my pain is worse since WLS. But it was worth it, at least I can exercise and look cute on the outside now.
Sorry here comes some more rain on your parade. My weight loss while not a big loss has done nothing to relieve the pain and I don't really expect it to. Like you said it may help joint pain but won't help at all with the muscle pain of fibro. It seems to be the general consensus on the forum here that no matter how much you lose it doesn't do anything much for our fibro pain. There are several drugs out now to help treat it but many of us also need narcotic pain meds. If you are suffering with the pain do see a rheumatologist or a pain specialist about treatment. We have to learn not to let the naysayers get us down because even the medical community is taking it seriously these days. Good luck!
Yup. I was just sharing with my husband that I feel like my fibro has gotten worse since my weight loss (-166 lb.). Yes, my knees, feet, and lower back have stopped hurting in terms of pain from weight bearing -- and I am soooo thankful to God for that. At the same time, without those distractions, I seem to feel my fibro pain more acutely, and have exacerbations more often. Go figure. I was sure it would lessen with my weight loss.
I recently to my physician (who is new to me) that Zoloft was not helping my pain (he didn't realize that it had been prescribed for fibro). He has been tapering me off of it. Unfortunately, the pain is even worse now.
What to do.

JoAnn,
I hate to disappoint you but-Ido"feel" better afterI have lost weight I think that would bea given. But I am still in pain with the fibro and my severe arthritis. I am still glad I had the surgery and would recommend it to any one. Since I am able to put my own shoes on and walk better and etc I feel better.
Good luck,
Pam

Hi.
You will notice pain on your joints after weight loss because we are now carrying ourselves differently. When we were heavy the weight was balanced out to distribute the weight example on our knees, lower back and hips and wasn't noticeable. Now that we are thin we aren't using the same weight bearing joints as much. So you will notice that they ache. But with Fibro, you won't get better because of weight loss. Fibro affects the muscles and fibrous tissues, tendons, etc. It is in areas of where the joints are, but it is not the joint. So, unfortunately, you will now have pain in areas that you didn't before. It is kinda hard to explain it without writing a book.
Hope this helps.
