Tailbone
I have tailbone pain too, I get cortisone shots in it every six months. I talked about removing it but my physical therapist told me that there are millions of capillaries and nerves and it isn't a good idea to remove it. She said that there is a huge chance of infection and more pain post op then you ever had pre op. Have you considered the risks of surgery? I hate my tailbone but I don't want more, worse problems than before. I sure hope it works out for you, and would you please email us when you are done and let us know what the pain level is post op on a scale from one to ten. Or email us when you get back from the doctor and tell us what he said. Not to sound negative or scare you but it is a big gamble, when you can get cort shots and it works very well. I told my bone dr. "Just can't you cut it off"? I just need like half an inch cut off but it isn't worth the pain and not being able to sit maybe permanently. I sit right on the tip of the tailbone, so I have major pain daily. I am a receptionist, but I don't sit all day but it is necessary sometimes. My thoughts are with you as you get the info needed to make your decision. Kristy
Please do send email afterwards. I would love to hear the results. I am just afraid that I might have pain that the shots don't take care of, if it didn't work and I had to rely on shots. I haven't had much success with the shots lately, I felt the doctor didn't use much of the cortizone. So I am due for another shot. If yours works, and once I find out what the post op care is and all the info, then it is something to think about. But I am too scared I think to do it. thanks. Kristy
My grandmother was the very first person to ever have this surgery. It was a big deal in the medical field at the time. She was in so much pain to the point that she had to stand forehead against a wall to sleep. The removal of the tailbone made her butt droop and bulge. She always wore flowing skirts to hide it. Never wore pants again. Good news is all the pain was gone and she lived another 45 years. I'm sure they've come a long way since the first surgery (1960? maybe), but this is something you should discuss with the doctor - what you're butt's gonna look like when they're done.

I had HIDEOUS tailbone pain last year for almost a year. It was the worse experience of my life. I was told that it was the way my son laid during my pregnancy throwing off my hips and then during birth breaking it and it healed wrong?? Something like that.
Anyhow...I went through the chiropractor, and honestly thought that we were getting nowhere...I had to quit working as a hygienist (cause I couldn't sit or stand quickly without wanting to rip my hair out or screaming)....but after months now I am ALOT BETTER!! I get sore if I sit for awhile, but it is NOTHING like before. If by some chance you haven't gone this route, and can handle another couple months...give it a try...might save you a sx! Good luck..I know you are miserable!

I had the horrible pain too. For almost a year, it hurt to sit, stand, sleep and walk. It was terrible. I was eventually diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and was put on lyrica and once I started that the pain in my tail bone was gone. I don't normally recommend medication, but if you haven't tried it maybe you might want to do that before you have your tail bone removed. Just a suggestion.
