I have had RSD (refles sympathetic dystrophy) for 16 years.  It is from my chest down and my right arm and my eyes.  I have fibermy in my back.  I am having a horrible time exercising.  I am in a wheelchair because of the RSD.  And so the only limb that can exercise is my left arm.  I am in constant pain that keeps my laying down 22+hours a day.  I am scheduled to have surgery in August.  I am worried I won't be able to lose much weight.  I have gained 110 lbs since going in the wheelshair (70lbs just from taking Lyrica)/  Is there anyone else out there who is so limited in their activites.  My current bmi is in the 50's.  Thank you for your support and help.  SusieQ45

Welcome!! I'm not in a wheel chair but am fairly limited in the exercise dept. because of fibro and COPD (lung disease). It certainly does make losing weight even more difficult than for the average person. I think that is why my lap band has been such a disappointment, I've never been someone who ate lots of food or even food that was very bad for me so the band just didn't work. Even with the band I can't exercise enough to make a difference so personally I would suggest you look into the surgeries that use malabsorption for weight loss. Have you tried cymbalta for the fibro? I tried Lyrica and it too made me gain weight so I stopped it and just used narcotic pain meds but recently my pain specialist had me try the cymbalta and it worked wonders for my fibro, without the weight gain. Wishing you the very best of luck with your surgery!!!Come back and visit often.

So did you lose any weight or go back for the bypass surgery?
What types of exercises have worked for you,  if any?  Lyrica made me gain 70pounds. I am on cymbalta already.  Like you I am not an eater or eatting anything really bad for me.  Were you able to lose any weight with the lap band or was it a total waste of your time?  If I can ask.  Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.

Well between my 6 mos. pre-op diet and the first year with the band I lost 50 lbs and have kept it off so I guess it wasn't a total failure but close to it. Wish I could have the bypass or VSG but I have a clotting disorder and my surgeon doesn't want to do anything that invasive. About the only exercise I can do is a recumbent stationary bike but even that bothers my back so I don't do much of it. I also have a Bowflex and try to do some strength training just using low weights so I don't aggravate the fibro too much. Best of luck to you!

I'm mostly not in a wheelchair now, but I have been (Kidney failure, etc., etc., etc.).   I feel a lot better and I have a lot more stamina, but certainly not what's normal.   My ProCrit shot is a week late now, and I can REALLY feel it.

I'm losing weight.   Probably not as quickly as somebody who can just take off and walk a mile or two, but it's coming off.   My BMI was in the 60s and in the 50s now.   Pretty much most of my exercise is in PT.    I lost 7# this week.   I'll probably never be skinny, but I figure the closer I can get to "normal" (whatever that is in relation to me) the better I'll feel and the easier everything else will be.

Good luck!

Thank you for sharing.  When was your surgery and what did you have done?  Do you go to PT often and what type of exercises are you doing.  And congratulations on your success!!  That is fantastic,  I too have a bmi in the 50's.  Good luck to you and thank you.  Let me know how you are doing from time to time.  My surgery will ne in August right after my daughter's wedding.

I was in a wheel chair if it involved a lot of walking like the store.
I weighed 470 lbs before surgery. I have two knee replacements
and severe arthritis and fibro my exercise is very limited because of pain. I am at 320 now and have not lost any more weight for a year. I am happy with what I have lost and i am able to do much more now. My health is a lot better now, hope this helps you.
