WLS helping with flare ups and day to day pain?

Okay, so I didn't do much research about my WLS effecting my fibromyalgia. I'm in a flare now, and it's a total PITA.

On the positive side, I've lost 56lbs. Very excited. The "we don't quite know the other part of what causes your joint degeneration" pain in my joints is lots better. I can actually do stairs (a flight or two) without my knees screaming in pain.

Does anyone have any info on weight-reduction effecting fibromyalgia? I spoke with my docs (rheumatologist and sugeon) briefly, and they said my fibro wouldn't be cured, and it may or may not lessen the symptoms by losing weight. I've been feeling great since surgery, with the exception of the current flare-up.

As far as pain mangement, I am on Cymbalta daily, tramadol 3 x a day, and vicodin for flare ups. My one issue is that pre-op, I could take one or two vicodin and still function. Now, I take a vicodin and I'm so loopy I can't do anything. Unfortunately, vicodin is the only thing that takes the edge off of my pain. Yet another Catch 22 that I have discovered since WLS.

Any links/advice on what to expect from here on out would be wonderful

Thanks!!!!

Hi and welcome! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I think we all pretty much agree that WLS does nothing to help our fibro. It should greatly help with any joint pain tho. Fibro is in the muscles and doesn't seem to be helped by decreasing our weight so maybe if you are lucky it'll at least rid you of the joint pain. Best of luck.

Hey there,
From my experience weightloss has not helped my pain at all. I have lost a total of about 75 lbs so far but well the only thing it has done for me is make my pants sag. The pain actually got worse for me.
I went  into a huge flare right after surgery and it lasted for maybe a month or so.
I have found that if you stretch your muscles, which is easier to do once you lose a little of the weight, that it helps the pain some. Mix that with a little heat and your good to go.

Another thing I figured out after WLS was the pain pills do not seem to last as long as they use to. What my doc does to combat that is to perscribe more quantity for me to take so I do not run out when I have to take them more often. I got lucky and got an awesome doc this time. Lord knows I went through a million crappy docs to get to her though.......

So my advice would be don't get your hopes up on WLS helping the pain any

Hi,
They don't really know what causes Fibro.  They think perhaps a trauma.  It doesn't have to be a physical trama, it can be a death in the family, your way of handling stress when you were younger, a major surgery/multiple surgeries.  Have you considered trying the fentanyl patch.  It is great.  I use the 25mcg pain patch and as a break through med, I take Norco and Cymbalta 30mg once a day, in the morning because it keeps me awake at night. I can move around a lot better.  I also have arthritis in my neck and lower back, but the pain patch really helps with the Fibro.  I go to physical therapy for all of it.  The pain patch doesn't make me feel "loopy".  I can't even tell I have it on, except "no pain".  I don't feel tired with the Norco, but if you get tired on the Vicodin, the Norco is double the Vicodin.  Hope you can get some relief soon.
