Do you think it took you longer to recover from WLS with having Fibro

I have not had surgery yet, but I wanted to know if you all thought with Fibro you had a worse recovery time than someone who did not have fibro?

I also had two knee replacements 1 in 2000, one in 2004. I think I hurt more and it did like send me in a flare, but still worth having the surgery. By the way the RNY was NOTHING compaired to my knee surgeries!

Hi MainePam,

I had a major Fibro flare when I had my revision in this past July 2,2008. I am having my left knee replaced May 7, 2009. What surgery is worse the Open revision or the total knee replacement ? I am starting to get really scared. My right knee they said they will do 4 to 6 weeks after the left knee. What do you think ? I just got a kenalog and marcaine injection in both knee;s today. Both knee's are a bit numb and I don't know how the bone on bone pain will go away till May 7. The doctor said this should help tie over the pain. What I don't understand these injections or synvic never worked on me to begin with. Why do they think it is going to work ? Thanks,

Hi
I had an open RNY in Nov 06 and just had my knee replaced on February 2, 09.  I think the knee was more painful but I have way more energy after the knee replacement.  I had a long talk with my surgeon's PA about drug protocol and I was on Oxtcontin, oxycodone and visteral.  It worked really well for me.  I had a few flair up's during my recovery but at 7 weeks out I'm in way less pain in my knee than I was before surgery.  I started to Aqua fitness 3 weeks after surgery and really find that helped strengthen my knee more than anything else.
I really am glad I had the knee surgery and if I had to I would have the other one done.

I do think mine hurt more than someone without fibro. Just because of the flare it sent me into. I stayed flared about 3 months straight. Talk about PAIN!! OMG
But it eventually went back to normal and the pounds started melting away. My fibro is still BAD but I do not regret my RNY.
I also think our meds that we have to take make us lose a whole lot faster than if we did not have to take any.
I wish you much much luck in your journey don't let the pain scare you or stop you it is all worth it.....

I did not flare at all--I think this is unusual though--but--Fatigue was a terrible problem. It continues to be a debilitating problem but at least I look marvelous as I 'rest'  !!     Christine (19 M0s. out and have gone from a size 26 to a 10)

Hi, Hope!

I'm 3 weeks out from a DS, and while trying to do what everybody else was doing (walk, walk and walk),  I've thrown myself into several flares.  I didn't flare in the hospital, because I had a talk with the anesthesiologist before surgery, and showed her the protocol that might lessen the chance of my flaring post-op.   I also have lupus, so all I could do was cross my fingers on that one!  They didn't push me to do a lot of laps in the hospital, either, because of my fibro/lupus history, in addition to asthma and bad knees. The joints are currently being cushioned with something my rheumy calls Euflexxa, a series of three shots in the knee joint every three months.  It is NOT cortisone.

I didn't flare until I got home and walked a quarter-mile one day.  I know with the trauma from the surgery, it's going to take me a lot longer to get up to speed on the exercise.  I absolutely CANNOT do a walking program on land.  It's just too hard on my body!  I will see my surgeon on Monday, and my incision and drain hole look pretty well healed.  Hopefully, she'll clear me to go back to my warm water pool exercise program, which by the way, is GREAT for fibro!

Hope -

Here;s a valuable tool for you, when you are talking with your surgeon and anesthesiologist - take it to the hospital with you.  It talks about the surgery protocol, and gives recommendations for post-surgical treatment.
