Has anyone tried the guaifenesin regime for their fibromyalgia? Christine

Never heard of it. What is it all about? The only thing I know about guiafenesin is that it's used to thin mucus, how does that relate with fibro? Full of questions aren't I?

It is the stuff for colds. A few years ago it was touted as a cure for fibro. Some people did have good results. Studies were inconclusive. I just had a doctor tell me to give it a try. I started it a few days ago but as I have a sinus infection/sore throat right now I cannot tell if it has helped. It HAS helped the sinus problem. You are supposed to take 300 mg. twice a day for a week then up it to 600 mg. a day. They say that at first it will make symptoms worse.  Web sites also say not to take the syrup but a pure form such as Mucinex. Christine

Hi.  I went through all the research for this product and even saw a Nurse in North Platte about it.  If I am thinking of the right thing, you take it but you also are to go salicylate free.  I am pretty sure that is spelled wrong.  Borh eating and even your hair products.  I spent hours finding "free" products and then chickened out.  Why????  When I read the forum about it I was totally scared to death.  They told how they would hurt much worse until they got these out of their systems.  Much worse.  I decided that it wasn't for me so check out the whole system.  There is a book somewhere about it but I don't remember the name.  I am pretty sure it was a male dr.

Thanks for responding. I am not crazy about male doctor's as they just do not seem to 'hear' very well. But I have 2 male doctors I am crazy about so there are always exceptions. If a female specialist is available that is who I go to. I have been taking 300 mg. of guifenesin for about a week and a half. I am still battling the worst bronchitis/sinus infection so I can't say if it is helping or not. Today I plan on upping the the dose to 600 twice a day. Due to the by-pass surgery I do not take any pain relievers (an occasional tylenol) so that has not been a problem. I do not think that I have had any problems with this. I am hoping for sudden up swing in energy this week with the higher dose and improvement in the bronchitis. On the other hand I am having a hysterectomy (with bladder sling) next week so I think my life will be in flux for a month. I will post again before surgery so I can report any symptoms. Christine
