Does WLS help with Fibromyalgia Pain?

Hi, I am set to have GBS next month.  I have read several articles on Fibromayalgia that says WLS reduces the pain and symptoms.  For those who have had GBS, is this true?  Do your symptoms improve after you start losing weight or am I just hoping against all odds?  Any input is appreciated.

Well I'm a lap bander but I haven't seen any particular improvement. I'm sure weight loss helps your joints but I don't know that it does alot for the muscles which is what is affected by the fibro. It may help some just with your general health and feeling better and will certainly be good for you however I wouldn't expect it to be a miracle cure for the fibro. Sorry I wi**** was a cure. This is just my personal experience and opinion so hopefully others will post too, maybe they have had better luck. Anyway best of luck on your surgery and I'm sure it will be a good step for you!

Thanks for the reply.  I want to hear everyone's experience...good or not so good.  As you say, just my general health improving hopefully will help.  Thank you so much.

didnt ge t my Fibro diagnosis until after wls. Before was told lose weight and it will get better. The first few months i felt much better as far as body pain goes but it came right back with a vengeance.  I also had a ruptured disk they finaly found when they couldnt blame weight anymore. I am just now working on getting treatment. I know I have had this for years.  Shannon

I'm glad you asked this question.  I have fibro also and am hoping for improvement with wieght loss.  For me it's the primary reason to seek GBS.  I wait with you for more responses!

WLS did not improve my fibromyalgia. If anything it is worse now. This is just my experience though....take it with a grain of salt. I do hope for you it is different. Congrats on your surgery date...WLS did help me greatly with pressure on my muscles and joints though. Although when I have a fibro flareup it's hard to tell exactly what is hurting and what isn't lol. Hugs.. Donna

Donna I have had the same exoeriance as you. My fibro pain is actuaaly worse. I have been trying to figure out if it is because after losing 120 pounds I am way more active or if it really has made it worse. I am now looking at the plastics and posted a question on the main board. Did the plastics affect your fibro because they are cutting into all those nerves it makes me wonder.                                                                                                                          Nancy

My symptoms vastly improved.  I use to take pain pills all day long.  I would have to take 2 an hour before I could venture out to my car at the end of a work day.  Everything was a struggle.  I feel so much better I still have my flair-ups and am bitter that I can't take some indocin when I do I usually take tylenol or tylenol 3 and flexeral.  The first time I took flexeral after surgery I literally was out for 14 hours I take 5 mg at night and sometimes take 10 if I am struggling.   I think exercsing really helps and try to get in 5 days a week. I like aqua jogging the best.  I still have trouble with my one leg hurting but otherwise nothing hurts all the time.   This surgery was one of the best things I have ever done for myself.  Deb

I hate to say but my fibro got worse after WLS. I am on a Duragesic patch for the pain. I use a new patch every 72 hours. I was on methodone and that did not even help. I hope your fibro is better than mine.

My neurologist always told me that weight doesn't cause fibro. Many skinny minnies have fibro too, some worse than someone who is overweight. I asked my surgeon how getting sleeved would affect my fibro and he said i would feel better in general but not to expect my fibro to disappear. I have been in a period of slight remission where my pain has gone from an 8 down to about a 4. I just pray my surgery doesn't cause it to flair up again. I also worry about how excercising will affect me. I need to excercise especially after surgery but I don't know that I will be one of those people who runs marathons *lol* Anne
