Hi.I am new to this site and would welcome any and all support. My daugher had gastric bypass surgery 3 weeks ago and had an injury to her spleen, which causes some pain and had some spikey fevers.  We are dealing with that, but she can't seem to keep any food down. The protein shakes make her sick and she can't keep down even eggs right now.Doc had put her on an antibiotic and things got worse at that point. Has anyone else had any of these difficulties? She is just taking in water and G2 gatorade and that is holding fine.  It is very scary not to see your daughter able to eat. Thx so much!

I didn't have the spleen injury, but I was extremely nauseous (to the point of being hospitalized twice for dehydration). I didn't eat anything but jello and chicken broth for almost the first whole month. My doctor put me on Zofran and that was a magic drug for me, as far as the nausea. It allowed me to begin eating. Once I started eating, I felt amazing compared to where I was.  Thank goodness your daughter has a caring mother! The only advice I would have for you (and not saying you do this of course), but my mother-in-law kept making comments about how she knew it was a mistake for me to have the surgery, which was probably the worst thing you can hear when you are feeling so low.

Thank you, darlin, for writing back!  My daughter was just given an anti-nauseous med, and I'm hoping that helps. She is getting some food down, but hasn't eaten much and vitamins bother her too. What kind of vitamins do you take??? Congrats on your surgery and I'm sorry you had to hear those statements from your mom-in-law.  It must have been very hard to hear. Best of luck on your new journey! You are doing great!!!

I take the Bariatric Vitamins that my doctor sells. However, I couldn't keep them down the first five weeks, as well as I couldn't keep down protein drinks. Now the only protein drink I can keep down is the BariWise Hot Chocolate. The warmth of the drink always relaxes my tummy and feels wonderful. When I was having a hard time with nausea I'd also drink hot decaf tea (which I hate, but it felt good) and my doctor had me chew sugar-free cinammon gum and it surprisingly helped.  Some things that made me sick in the beginning (potatoes, cottage cheese, string cheese), I have no problems with now. I've kinda learned that just because something makes me sick this week, doesn't mean it will next :) .

Hope that's some more helpful hints. Keep us posted on her progress!

Thank you so much Holli for all of your info!I think it will be extremely helpful to my daughter! Your knowledge of going through this is so pertinent and terrific. Every word is a gift to me, and to h er, I'm sure!  The Hot Chocolate sounds wonderful.  Great info to retry things as well! Yes! You are just about 6 weeks ahead of my daugher in your RNY surgery.  Any hints are greatly appreciated and I can't thank you enough. I will send this note to her as well!  Thank you so much!

No problem...I came looking to these boards too when I was going through it. I went from thinking this surgery was a nightmare to now feeling like I got my life back! I'm sure your daughter will be feeling much better soon.

I'm so excited for you and hoping the same happens for my daughter soon.  I think it is so rough in the beginning w/this surgery and I want her over the hump like you!!! Thx so much. You are a doll and I'm so happy for you. Please stay in touch and send me any hints for eating more that you had since she is able to eat very little right now. Thank you!!!

I'm glad, Holly, that I'm good for your self-esteem and you look gorgeous in your pix! My daughter is having trouble eating much w/o getting sick. They put her on another antinausea med, but not working, going to ask her for yours. Could you get the liquid bariatric vitamins down at 4.5 weeks? What were you eating then? Protein drinks are very hard for her.I ordered her the hot choc drink. I'm worried about her. Thx so much. I started taking the pill form of the vitamins at about six weeks out. Let's see if I can remember what I was eating then...string cheese, crackers, peanut butter, ground turkey meat (w/ taco seasoning, w/ a low sugar marinara sauce), and a lot of soup. Warm soup felt so good on my stomach and calmed it down quite a bit.  Hopefully she'll like and be able to drink the protein drink. I drink two of those a day now (one for breakfast and one before bed). I "dumped" all the other protein drinks but this one. They all made me really sick. Walking actually helped some with my tummy troubles. I definitely didn't feel like doing, but when I did my stomach calmed down some.  I still had nausea in the morning up until about two weeks ago.  The dr said that was because you are somewhat dehydrated in the morning and you have all that mucous built up from not drinking water at night. So now I keep a jug of water by my bed and get up a few times in the middle of the night and drink water.  She needs to make sure she's getting her water in. Also don't lie down after eating for at least a half hour, that can make you nauseous.  Drinking too soon after a meal can make you sick. Some drs tell you that smelling an alcohol swab when you are nauseous can help, but it's never worked for me. Mainly now when I get nauseous I just chew a piece of sugar free cinammon gum and it goes away pretty quick. I sure hope she gets to feeling better soon!
