Not enough fluids, now what?

I dont think I am getting enough fluids and protein. Since 8:30 this morning I have eaten 3 oz vanilla pudding, 3 oz chicken broth, 3 oz cottage cheese, and I have drank only about 12 oz of water and about 3 oz propel. I am going to make a protein shake with unjury powder and milk. If I make a 6 oz glass of milk, how long should it take me to drink it?

I have no idea.. but I do know that in the beginning.. I had RNY, that I did not get in all that I was suppose to.. I got in WAY LESS than what I was suppose to.. I would force me to eat a tablespoon of something just cuz I thought my body needed it.. and I did fine. Just do what you can do.. but if you are ever in immense pain.. or totally don't feel right.. call your doctor!! It sounds like you're doing fine tho

I agree with Rhonda, just do what you can. i don't think anyone gets in enough fluids right off the bat. Hell I am nearly four years out and I still can't always get in all the fluid I need. I also wouldn't worry about how long it "should" take you to drink something, go at whatever pace you feel comfortable with and trust the signs your body gives you to know if you are drinking too much too fast, because trust me you will know it.

Jill I think you are doing just fine with your intake..... you are what just a couple of days out from surgery (CONGRATULATIONS!!!) and I guess what I was told 4 1/2 years ago now that in the very beginning as long as you are getting something in that is good. and I think you are doing awesome. Do me a favor and hold up your thumb.... about 3/4 of that is how big your stomach is and it is not going to take much to fill it up. Just remember to wait the amount of time your surgeon said after you drink before you eat, and then however long you are suppose to wait after you eat to drink again. You want the solid stuff to stay with you as long as possible. Just a word of advice if there is anything else you can mix that protein drink with other than milk I would. Milk contains sugar AND there are some people who become lactose intolerant after surgery so it MIGHT not sit well with you. I personally think my love of milk is what slowed my weightloss way down. I refused to give it up (because of the calcium) and I was one of the lucky ones who was NOT lactose intolerant. I can drink lots of it. So I am my own worst enemy. Another word of advice take your time drinking... a friend of mine right after surgery decided that she wanted to gulp (she forgot) and she said it hurt SOOOO bad... needless to say she never did that again. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

Thanks for all the advice. I just want to make sure I am getting enough. I dont know if its the incision that hurts or my stomach from not getting as much intake as I had before.

btw.. if you get a chance.. update your profile.. noting that you are a Bander and the date of surgery. There are a few Banders on here.. and I hope that they come on and give your advise and encouragement. But there is also a Banders Forum.. you can always go there and ask specific questions. but you have to promise to always come back here now

Jill, relax. You're ok. "They" tell us what we're supposed to get in, but quite a few of us (even bandsters) had big trouble doing anywhere close to what we were told. I had open rny. My first 3 days which were in the hospital, I sucked on 2 popcicles and had maybe 1/4 cup of liquids. When I got home, I tried to drink, but it hurt or I wasn't able to get anything down. Worst part for me, I never could get anything cold enough to suit me. I went through 7, yes 7 bags of ice the first week and think I maybe drank 2 cups of water in that same time. I could eat nothing, not even drink broth. Finally, my caretaker thought about instant mashed potatoes. She made me a 1/4 of garlic mashed potatoes. They smelled sooooooo good. So, I nibbled for over an hour on 1 tablespoon of instant mashed potatoes. I know this is new to you, but don't stress because you aren't able to do what your doctor or nutrionist said. Yes, you must hydrate. Yes, you should get in protein. Yes, you should take vitamins in the next two weeks. No, you should not have added misery because you can't eat. You've done soooooooo much better in your first day home than I did in 2 weeks after my surgery. Keep on! You're doing great!!! Liz

You will find (if you haven't already) Jill that everyone is different with their eating habits, weight loss, fluid intake etc. It looks to me like your doing wonderfully well with your protein intake. Geesh I could'nt even eat what your eating now till about my 4th month out. Just be very careful and don't try to eat too much just because you feel you aren't getting enough of anything in, believe me when I say (and I know all others that have had this done will agree) it is NOT a pleasant experience Keep up the GREAT work!!!! Thank you all so much for all for the advise. Its 5 days since my surgery and I can honestly say I am doing great. I kept trying the unjury powder, and I ~really~ dont like it. I do however love the carn. instant breakfast-choc- although it has to be really cold. I am doing fine with the milk, I can also eat the fat free sugar free pudding. Yogurt taste good too. Again thanks so much for all the support, It means the world to me to know that there are such nice people in the world. ~Jill~
