getting enough protein
I had my surgery on 3/17. I am doing great as far as pain and getting around.I do get bouts of depresion at times but I guess that is normal.
My real problem is that I can't get all the required Protein I need. I have tried to drink Slimfast , Atkins, Instant breakfast all are too sweet and makes me sick to my stomach, and within 20 min. of drinking any of the above I have to RUN to the restroom or else mess all over myself. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get my required Protein in? I know I need it but the above does get old after a while. Any advice will be gratfully appreciated. Thanks to everyone
Hi Donna,
I had surgery the same day as you.
I am drinking Zero Carb- Isopure.
Every day, I drink at least one 20 oz bottle.
It comes in many flavors. I do put some diet V8 splash in with it for additional flavor.
Isopure has 40 grams of protein per bottle.
It was recommended by my doctor and his staff.
You can buy it at GNC stores or online.
I also have the drinks like nutrasource, slimfast, etc.. but I get tired of those easily. I put Isopure on crushed ice and sip it. No problem.
I do not get runs from it either...
Does anyone have any advice on how I can get my required Protein in?
I have had the same problem (4 weeks post-op), and I found that I had become very lactose intolerant and that soy protein is too hard to digest. However, my sweetie and I ran across Rice Protein (NutriBiotic http://www.nutribiotic.com) which is totally fabulous! It doesn't bulk up in smoothies, can be sprinkled on yoghurt, etc.
Also, you might try using nutritional yeast: high in protein per 1.5 tablespoons (Calories - 65, Carbohydrates - 7gm, Protein - 8gm, Fat - 0.6gm, Vitamin B-1 - 8mg - 533%, Vitamin B-2 - 8mg - 471%, Niacin (niacinamide) - 45mg - 225%, Vitamin B-6 - 8mg - 400%, Folic Acid - 116mcg - 29%, Vitamins B-12 - 6.4mcg - 108%). Nutritional yeast is sort of nutty-cheesy tasting and can be stirred into refried beans, mashed potatoes, soups and anything savory or sprinkled on salads.
Hope this helps
