My highest weight was 362.  I lost to 292 on LA Weight loss, then started going up again.  At  310, I had surgery (RNY) Sept 2004.  I lost down to 170 and discovered I had cancer, Because of Chemo - I lost down to 145 and was told I had to gain weight. I started eating things I hadn't before and I am now 240.  I want to be 170 again without surgery. Biggest problem is that my arthritis in my knees makes it hard to exercise and I am disabled (walking with a cane or walker).  Help me please...

You can do it, but of course with the inability to exercise it will be difficult.  Bottom line--you have to eat less than you burn each day to create a deficit to lose.  Start by going back to the basics and journaling every day.  Do whatever exercise your body allows you to--can you do free weights for your upper body while sitting in a chair?  Situps?  Swimming?

Be accountable to someone.  On the Alabama board I do a daily "whatcha eatin" post--sometimes no one responds but it makes me accountable.

You've beat obesity and you've beat cancer........you can do this!

Thank you so much for the upbeat and positive response.  I think alot of my problem was depression and no accountability. Now, I am trying, and it is so hard.   I think I will dig out my pre/post surgery journal and look at what and how I ate.  Thank you again.

This surgery alone reaps huge changes on us mentally let alone throwing cancer in the mix.  Are you taking anything for the depression (something very minimal, like Effexor 37.5 just to take the edge off?)  Might help you focus on being accountable.  Also, look into the Arthritis Foundation for an area pool near you that does Aquatic exercise or water walking or see if your doc will give you a script for water therapy at a Physical Therapist.

I find that logging everything I eat makes me more accountable.  I suggest that you check in with a nutritionist for a couple of months - Many of the nutrionists that work with bariatric patients have a lot of experience with our specific issues.  That should help you get on the right track.

I have arthritis in my ankle and it makes it hard to excercise also, I got one of those incumbent (spelling?) bikes, the ones where you are leaning back while peddling. It is a stationary bike so I can do it in my own house and it helps because I am not putting weight on my joints while peddling. Maybe give that a try. Best of luck to you!!
