regaining

I had RNY on 8/8/08.  I had lost over 210 lbs.  Now I have gained 50 lbs back and it keeps going up.  I know that I have stopped running all the miles that I have done in the past and my eating is starting to be more.

I know that I have to start exercising more and eating less.  But my question is how do I know if my stomach has reattached itself.

thanks for the help

Hey I have sleeve and not quite 2mths out but my aunt had RNY almost 10yrs ago and she has gained about 30lbs. I told her about the 5daypouchtest and she said it helped her get back on track and learn that she does still have restriction.

That may be a good place to start for you. you can find the instrctions at 5daypouchtest.com.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!!!

I don't believe that your stomach can "reattach itself". You can stretch out the pouch, and it can accomodate more food, tho. I'd suggest going back to basics. Track every thing you put in your mouth.

Hi Shane,

Your stomach CAN grow back together, but it is rare. You can tell by getting an upper GI series, or a barium swallow (I was just tested).

Let me know if you have any questions, feel free to message me personally also.

well really, if you take a packet of cottage cheese, see how much you can eat of that. If your pouch is still intact, it shouldn't be a whole lot. If you have a full stomach, you would be able to eat multiple packets.

The body is an amazing thing.  I have regained and thought perhaps my pouch had stretched.  So I had a barium swallow done, only to find my pouch is still small, very small!  According to my surgeon, the intestines learn to become part of the pouch over time.  So if you overload your pouch with slider foods and/or drink with your meals, etc., the portion of intestines attached to your pouch after about 2 years will learn to function as a stomach.

It's amazing how the body will compensate for itself. Which is why surgeons want us to establish lifelong habits in the beginning to maintain long term.  The journey continues for life.  Get back to the exercise, count your calories, protein first (as it stays in the actual pouch longer).

Just like before surgery, the diligence it takes to get it off, you have to have twice as much to keep it off!  I too have regained and am finally on the path to losing again.  It's not easy, but it can be done.

All the best...

So if this happens, going back to basics will definitely help you start to lose weight again? I had RNY 03/2007 and I am really struggling with portion control and self discipline. I went from 300 to 208 and am now at about 240. I'm 5'3" and will be 40 in Nov. I still wear size 20/22 and get very very very frustrated with myself for not getting down to that beautiful "after" picture that I thought I would get to.

What did you do to get back to basics?

Thanks!  Jenifer

Yes, going back to basics will help you lose again.  But you must exercise daily!!! Drink your water, don't drink with meals.  Back to basics does not mean little tiny meals as this far out we don't have the regulator.  However, stick to protein and veges.  Log your food.  I use the dailyplate.  Avoid sugar and carbs completely.

If you are able to do the protein train for 10 days.  Eat nothing but protein.  Protein stays in the pouch longer and keeps you feeling satisfied longer.  This protein train and detox you, and you'll lose some weight early on to keep you motivated to continue.  Exercise.  Go for a daily walk or do an exercise tape.  The excercise is really the key.

Our stories are similar... I went from 326 to 211... felt good at 211, but never reached onderland.  Well, my goal is by January 1, 2011 to have reached onderland finally.  I'm working with a trainer three days a week.  Walking the park or swimming the days I don't see the trainer and trying my darndest to stick to protein and veges only.  This is the hard part, because now you have to use discipline as opposed to dumping or a full pouch.

My advice, read the board daily and get started with your new goal.  If you mess up, don't start over tomorrow. Start over the next minute.

You can do this.... I'm pulling for you.  Let's meet each other in onderland soon!

Wow you aren't kidding, our stories are very similiar. Can you give me an estimate of what a trainer runs? Is it per visit or how does it work? Do they motivate you & check in on you if you don't show up for your time with them?

Thank you for the info. I am about to download a food logging app for my phone and make that my first step. Have you started using protein shakes again to supplement your protein intake? I never minded them & have thought about going back to one or two a day to help.
