Did anyone find that they have stretched their pouch or stoma w/ RNY??
I'm seven months out and I ate a whole sandwich this am. I was surprised that I could eat that much at one sitting w/o feeling extremely full or tight in the pouch area, but I did.
I wanted to ask this question of those who may have had some difficulty with eating more than they should too soon with the RNY. What are the causes or symptoms of a stretched pouch and/or stoma? How can this problem be resolved?

Hey I got this from: www.associatedcontent.com/
Understanding Your New Roux-en-Y Gastric Pouch...............Your original stomach (before surgery) could hold up to 4 liters of food (that's 16 cups!!). Your new pouch, at the time of surgery, was about 1ounce and could hold about 2 ounces of food. Your surgeon made your pouch out of the least-stretchy part of your stomach (the Fundus), so it's difficult to stretch it.
BUT...
Our pouches will GROW over time. Yes, it's a living organ and your body tries to compensate for the rearranging we did to it during bariatric surgery and it will grow to help get in as much nutrition as possible. A mature pouch is anywhere from 6 ounces to 9 ounces in size... and can naturally stretch to hold up to 12 ounces of food at a time. A pouch reaches maturity at about the 2-year mark. By 6 months after RNY gastric bypass surgery your pouch has grown to about 2/3 of it's maturity level. Once you are a year out, your pouch is no longer 1 ounce in size ... it's more like 3 ounces or 4 ounces and can hold 6 to 8 ounces of food.

Hi there
I often wondered the same thing. My first question to you would be "are you drinking with that sandwich?" I found that I could eat VERY large portions if I were drinking with or too close to the meal. If you aren't drinking and can still eat more than you think you should, check out the 5 day pouch test. Just google 5 day pouch test and it gives you some links to the test. I did it and found that it helped me connect with that original tightness I had in the pouch. It also gave me more confidence that my tool was not "broken".
Good luck to you
Cheryl
I'm reading your notes with great interest as I am due to have my procedure on November 9th!
YEAH!!
I noticed that you have already lost 90 pounds and only have 30 more to go!! This is FANTASTIC!!!!
I think that others have answered the question you had better than I who has not had the surgery yet could however look at it this way..
We are supposed to be learning how to eat during the first two years..honeymoon period..and if you are noticing that one sandwich is too much..then you are doing your job! I know one sandwich can quickly lead to 1 and 1/2 to 2.....and we know where that will lead us!
I wish you all the best and will keep up with your process..

I am almost done with all my testing and my insurance will cover the gastric bypass, I am so affraid that I will have this surgery and not be able to keep the weight off. I love food to much, and am not one to keep going to the gym and eating right everyday, plus my children don't agree that I do the surgery they think it's to dangerous. I will go foward with it and hopefully get support from all of you on here
I also have family and friends who don't want me to have the surgery. They say it's too drastic, too dangerous, too hard at my age (60), etc. I just look at them and smile and say. "I know what I'm doing, I've been thru it before (original VBG in 1990 that came apart 5 yrs ago) and I'm positive I'll be able to lose the weight again. it's what I want to do for myself. It's my gift to me." And I ask them to just be happy for me that I'm moving forward and not letting myself stay stuck in the blame game anymore. I did that for 4 years and it sucks!!!! I'm feeling positive that I will do it right and help myself. If I can do this and feel so good about it, I know you can, too. You will do great.....believe in yourself!!! We'll do this together, ok?
I'm runnin faster now and I see my road ahead as smooth and flowing, like a river from God to my Shining Sea.
Start weight: 268. Next goal is ?? who knows how low????
